Hi there, I got a virus on the 6th September, I think by just clicking on a picture online. My firefox has been messed with and was redirecting me all over the place, although that has stopped now. Has been a real struggle to download your suggested programs due to redirections and failed connections etc but google chrome was a big help because it wasn't effected.

Spybot was already installed and discovered the virus on a scan, description was Smitfraud coresystems(something or other) and supposedly deleted the files.

AVG only caught the virus later on but hasn't dealt with it. AVG identified a couple of problems, they were a TROJAN HORSE DROPPER.BRAVIX.A and TROJAN HORSE DOWNLOADER FRAUDLOAD.U

Spyware doctor was uploaded after and that has found what it calls a TROJAN.TDSSERV

Problems are stemming from files in C:Windowssystem32tdssinit.dll I think.

I'm having problems using the browser based scanners, they just don't work or are very slow and I can't seem to get hijack this to work at the moment, so could the virus be interfering with that??

Another thing I did was to stop system restore because I'd read that viruses can hide out in it and be 'reborn'

I will try to post a log as soon as I can get HJT working.

Thank you so much in advance for any help.

Matt.

O.K I got the log off of HJT....

Hello and welcome to BC,

Please download SDFix by Andy Manchesta and save it to your desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
  • A new folder will be extracted to your %systemdrive%, typically C:\SDFix
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt along with any other requested logs at the end of these instructions.

NEXT

Please visit below webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix. Make sure you download and save ComboFix DIRECTLY to your Desktop

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

This includes installing the Windows XP Recovery Console in case you have not installed it yet.

Please make sure you disable ALL of your Antivirus/Antispyware/Firewall before running ComboFix.. Please visit HERE if you don't know how.. Please re-enable them back after performing all steps given..

Once you install the Recovery Console, when you reboot your computer, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well. DO NOT select Recovery Console as we don't need it. By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows. That is normal.

Post the log from ComboFix (located in C:\combofix.txt) when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Post me these logs in your next reply..

1. SDFix
2. ComboFix
3. A fresh HijackThis log (After ComboFix step)

Keep calm, make it simple, use your brain, don't freak out, and you'll be just fine..

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

I just did an AVG scan, which was clear. The Spyware Doctor came up with a Trojan (low risk one somehow??) which I deleted and I'm just doing a Spybot scan.....which is clear!
The computer seems a lot better than it was, but I'm not 100% sure it's clean.

You did a great job helping me out, I can't thank you enough.

Shall I see how I get on and contact you if I have any problems?

Hi again, the computer seems fine now. It was a bit slow but I think it was because I had too much real time protection running.

Browsers are all running fine and all scans coming up clear.

Fingers crossed, it's all good now.

Thanks and all the best.
