my hard drive died and i don't have a windows cd...I have a gateway laptop, would I be able to use someone else's windows disc that was bundled with their dell or compaq or whatever...or is that not compatible with gateway and i'd have to get a copy of windows someone bought from a store?

You could try a Dell (or other) disk but it probably won't work. You'll need to use the same version (Home or Pro).

The reason probably won't work is that the hardware drivers won't match your machine. However, after the install you might just be able to boot into Safe Mode, and if you can get that far you can then update the drivers for the ones that match your machine.
The power of accurate observation is commonly called cynicism by those who haven't got it.

How old is the lap top? If it is recently new, then I would call up Gateway and see if they can send you a copy of your system restore cd.
