I was wondering if anyone has installed a newer drive (ata100) into an Armada M700 and running windows xp home? My particular question is what driver is installed for the ide ata/atapi controllers? If you have an ata (ide/eide) drive does it use the sata ahci controller driver? This is found under device manager.

A SATA drive is not compatible with an IDE connection. It will not fit. They look the same, the connection is different

I am well aware of this. I am strictly talking about the controller driver itself. To be more specific, Is the Intel ICH8 SATA AHCI controller universal for SATA and IDE/EIDE drives? If not what controller driver should Windows XP be installing?

My EIDE drives reflect a driver made/approved in 2001, carrying a Microsoft Publisher tag.

My SATA drives reflect a driver from the drivers CD for the motherboard I use.

XP has no SATA driver of any sort as part of its stock...if you have one installed, it came from the motherboard packet (or belongs to an external controller).

All other hardware drivers come from the motherboard CD.
