First, a big thanks to all who might help. Now for the problem:

My computer (winxp pro/AMD 800/256 ram) suddenly started taking forever to boot up. The tardiness extends to opening up any program: the harddrive light blinks, but takes approx 10 seconds for anything to start happening. Internet surfing has also slowed considerably (via comcast cable). I'm running a full and fully updated suite of Norton, AdAware, SpyBot and even a storebought copy of SpySweeper. All show a clean system. But something doesn't smell right...

Here's a copy of the file log from Hijack This:

Nothing in your log indiciates a problem.

Try this:

Please run two online virus scans:

http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
http://housecall.antivirus.com/

Then let us know if its working better and what the scans found.
