So. I Just purchased a new hardrive and was getting everything all set up and boom attack of the Windows Security Alert! It comes up every few moments I'm on the internet.

I've scanned with: (all updated before scan)
McAfee
Spyhunter 3
MalwareBytes
Spybot
HijackThis
Ad-Aware (I've removed this after the scan as Spybot and McAfee arent please with me having it)

All to no avail. I scan, delete, reboot, repeat untill there is nothing left and then as soon as I get on the net back comes my dear old friend.

For informational purposes, the virus/worm/demonic substance/whatever it feels like today, that Windows Security Center claims I'm infected with have been the following:
Trojan-spy.win32.keylogger.aa
Trojan-spy.win32.greenscreen
Trojan-downloader.win32.agent.bq
Trojan-spy.html.bankfraud.dq
Ttrojan-clicker.win32.tiny.h

I will attach my Hijackthis log to this post as well as a image of one of the alerts.
(yes the image is also of this very text that I'm writing with the demon, wasnt he nice to visit?)

Hello Sarah,

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post. Please do not attach the log.
  • *************************
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized). Please do not attach the logs.

Hi Sarah,

You have a suspicious file we need to check.

You will need to see hidden files, so follow these directions:

Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Go to next site: http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file. (Folders and files with a tilde (~), means that there is a file/folder that starts with the six characters in front of the tilde, note that there may be spaces in the name.) :

C:\DOCUME~1\Valkyrie\LOCALS~1\Temp\UIUCU.EXE

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Save the results in notepad.
Once scanned, copy and paste the results also in your next reply.

NOTE: I usually enter my email address at virus total so they can send me the scan results. They usually only take a couple minutes to reply.
You can copy/paste the results of scan results here.

*******************************************

I see Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now, if you did not install it.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

If you uninstalled, please navigate to and delete the following folders
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

*******************************************

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

Beginners Guide to CCleaner

*******************************************

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running.
While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with the fixes.
So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AppApi] C:\WINDOWS\system32\gvepqpur.exe

These are optional fixes. The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
(Description: Intel hotkey applet. Unnecessary. Removing this will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] \"C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe\"
(Description: Adobe reader startup - unnecessarily uses system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \"C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe\"
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE
(Description: Microsoft Office startup assistant. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a significant amount of system resources.)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
(Description: Apple's QuickTime Tray Icon which enables you to start QuickTime from the System Tray (from version 5 onward). Given the extremely simple functionality of this Tray icon, it is in our view an unreasonable resource hog - it has been measured to use as much as 1.5Mb of memory at times in earlier versions, and in version 7 it uses as much as 3.4Mb of memory on our test systems. Yet, on Windows PCs hardly anyone starts QuickTime manually, whether from the System Tray or otherwise - what usually happens is that the end-user opens a QuickTime movie file or email attachment and Windows then automatically opens QuickTime to enable the end-user to view the movie or video. There is therefore almost never a need for the end-user to start QuickTime manually from the System Tray. )

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
(Description: Background task installed by Apple's iTunes music player and also by version 7 of QuickTime which now comes inseparably bundled with iTunes. This task does not actually need to be installed as a startup since iTunes starts it up anyway when it needs it. Let iTunes start it up whenever it needs to, particularly since it has a history of occasionally conflicting with other software and it uses nearly 6Mb of memory.)

O23 - Service: Viewpoint Manager Service - Viewpoint Corporation - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Common\ViewpointService.exe
(Description: Viewpoint Manager Service. Related to viewpoint which is usually considered foistware, usually installed with AOL. Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foistware)

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix checked"

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Autocomplete Forum History.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Desktop Shortcuts.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all including cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer.

Download Deckard's Association File Tool  daft.exe and save it to your desktop.
Double click on it and click Run.
Click on the Scan button.
If it finds faulty file associations, they will appear in red beside a checkbox. If this occurs, just place a checkmark (tick) in the boxes in question.[/b]
Click the Fix button.

Ppost a new Hijackthis log, OTMoveIt2 log, the VirusTotal results, and tell me how your computer is running.

haha terrible actually, after a few reboots the pc seemed fine but this morning completely died on me. I'm on a desktop now. The poor laptop doesnt even recognize the harddrive (i tried it with 3 others and still nothing), also tried with the reboot disks. failure. uber failure.

at least I suppose this means you wont have to put up with my endless pc questions, but I thank you so much for doing so. One last question though, any specific laptop recommendations in your opinion? No more DELL computers please!!!! I really just want a good running system that can put up with my music, videos, stay pretty fast and a rockin graphics card. you're great for helping out so much, I hope you have an amazing evening

Sorry to hear about your computer troubles.

All the malware is gone, so your problems must be caused by either hardware, memory, applications, or drivers.

Since my expertise is malware removal, I cant help you with your hardware, memory, applications, or drivers problems. I suggest you go our Windows XP forum and see what our experts there can do for you.

I do not give recommendations on which computer is best, as each person has different experinces with each manufacturer.
Personally, I like Dell, as you can have them build the computer to your specifications.

Hi Sarah,

Good to see you got your computer running again.

Please tell me what problems you are seeing on this computer.

If you are still seeing malware problems then please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Hi Sarah,

Looks good. That file is in the McAfee quarentine folder.

Lets do the clean up.

Open OTMoveIt2 and click the CleanUp! button on top.
In the left pane, it will display a list of tools and other related files which you may have downloaded/used during our cleanup + backup folders that were created with the bad files present.
