I had to reformat my hard drive and as I was installing windows xp it is asking for the windows xp product key to finish installing windows xp. I lost it. Is there any way I could find or retrieve the windows xp key from the disk itself because my hardrive was reformatted and does not have it on there.

Thanks!

Your key isn't stored on the CD itself. You will have to try and find it, or buy another copy of XP or get Vista.

Your key should be on a sticker that you are supposed to fix onto your PC.

If that was the case then why must we enter the Key every time we install?

The only reason it would be in the unattended.txt file is when the cd was slipstreamed. Default Windows XP CD's do not have the key in unattended file.
