Hello kaizen,

Why do you suspect a keylogger?

Please tell me the number users on this computer.
Do you share this computer with other users?

Download SUPERantispyware
  • Load SUPERantispyware and click the check for updates button.
  • Once the update is finished click the scan your computer button.
  • Check Perform Complete Scan and then next.
  • Superantispyware will now scan your computer and when its finished it will list all the infections it has found.
  • Make sure that they all have a check next to them and press next.
  • Click finish and you will be taken back to the main interface.
  • Click Preferences and then click the statistics/logs tab. Click the dated log and press view log and a text file will appear.
  • Copy and paste the log to this thread.

I suspect a keylogger because two of my online accounts have been taken ovr recently. (they are back in my possession now)
Normally I am the only person who uses this computer but occasionally my father also uses it so I have no idea if he may have downloaded something malicious.

That log looks too short. I need to see the entire log. Are you sure you posted the entire log?

Keylogger.Actual Spy
C:\WINDOWS\system\actualspystart.lnk

Please read the details here about Actual spy and the risks you are exposed to. :)

Did you install the keylogger? Or your father?
Have you been downloading Cracks, keygens or going to pirate sites?

Keylogging programs can be legitimate but their related files are often detected by anti-virus or anti-malware scans as a "RiskTool", "Hacking tool, "Potentially unwanted tool" or even a "Trojan".

These types of programs have legitimate uses in contexts where an authorized user or administrator has knowingly installed it. Potentially unwanted does not necessarily mean the file is malware or a bad program. It means it has the potential for being misused by others. Anti-virus and anti-malware utilities cannot cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs.

If not, you should consider the computer compromised. If it was used for online banking or has credit card information on it, all passwords should be changed immediately to include those used for email, eBay and forums. They should be changed by using a different computer and not the one where the keylogger was installed.

Although the keylogger has been identified and removed, your PC has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again. It is dangerous and incorrect to assume that because the keylogger has been removed the computer is now secure. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of malware, the best course of action is to reformat and reinstall the OS.

Please read "When should I re-format?".

Yes, keyloggers are serious.
Keyloggers are designed to be invisable, so I cant guarentee I can remove all parts of it.

I can remove any most malware, but keyloggers are another case.

Your PC has likely been compromised and there is no way to be sure the computer can ever be trusted again unless you reformat.
It is dangerous and incorrect to assume that because the keylogger has been removed the computer is now secure.

Is reformatting the only way since I dont have an external harddrive in order to back up my files?

It the only way, as I cant remove it. If you dont have a external hard drive, then you can back up to CD.

If you decide not to reformat, then I can remove whatever malware I currently see on this computer. But even after I do that, I cannot guarentee that the keylogger is gone.

Let me know what you decide.

Yes, I can remove whatever malware I find.. but keep in mind that there is no way to remove the keylogger.
We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

That means your computer is not secure even though you changed the passwords.
This keylogger can come into your computer with downloads of cracks, keygens and visiting pirate sites. Have you done any of that?

I will try to backup all my files by cd.

That should be done whatever the outcome.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
info.txtcan also be found at c:\RSIT\info.txt

Hello kaizen,

Do not uninstall Java 6 Update 7, as that is the latest version.

Click on start, then control panel, and then double-click on add/remove programs.
From within add/remove program uninstall the following by double-clicking on the following entries:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
Java 6 Update 2
Java 6 Update 3
Java 6 Update 5

Did you recnetly uninstall AVG antivirus? I still see remenents in your log.

You will need to see hidden files, so follow these directions:
Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Go to next site: http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

C:\Program Files\ACSPMonitor\ASMonitor.exe

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Save the results in notepad.
Once scanned, copy and paste the results also in your next reply.

NOTE: I usually enter my email address at virus total so they can send me the scan results. They usually only take a couple minutes to reply.
You can copy/paste the results of scan results here.

Hello kaizen,

The directory C:\Program Files\ACSPMonitor\ASMonitor.exe
Is not on my pc.

That is great. Remember, I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards we remove malware.

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer and SpySweeper running.
While these are normally a wonderful tools to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with the fixes.

So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts

You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

To disable SpySweeper
Open Spysweeper and click on Options > Program Options and uncheck "load at windows startup".
On the left click "shields" and then uncheck everything there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".
Exit the program.

Download CCleaner and install it. (default location is best). Do not run it yet!

Beginners Guide to CCleaner

*******************************************

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [application] C:\Program Files\ACSPMonitor\ASMonitor.exe h

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix checked"

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

CAUTION: Please do NOT use the Issues or Registry button. This is a built-in registry cleaner. If you don't know how to use it, you may cause irreparable damage to your system.

1. Starting with v1.27.260, CCleaner installs the Yahoo Toolbar as an option which IS checkmarked by default during the installation.
IF you do NOT want it, REMOVE the checkmark when provided with the option OR download the toolbarfree Basic version instead of the Standard Build.

2. Before first use, select Options > Advanced and UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

3. Then select the items you wish to clean up.

In the Windows Tab:
Clean all entries in the "Internet Explorer" section except Autocomplete Forum History.
Clean all the entries in the "Windows Explorer" section.
Clean all entries in the "System" section except for Start Menu Shortcuts and Desktop Shortcuts.
Clean any others that you choose.

In the Applications Tab:
Clean all including cookies in the Firefox/Mozilla section if you use it.
Clean all in the Opera section if you use it.
Clean Sun Java in the Internet Section.
Clean any others that you choose.

4. Click the "Run Cleaner" button.
5. A pop up box will appear advising this process will permanently delete files from your system.
6. Click "OK" and it will scan and clean your system.
7. Click "exit" when done.

If it asks you to reboot at the end, click NO.

CCleaner should be run with the above settings for each User Account!

*******************************************

Reboot your computer.

Disable Trend Micro antivirus before running F-Secure online scan.

Lets run an F-Secure online scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:
Go to http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml

Notes:
This scan will only work with Internet Explorer
You must have administrator rights to run this scan
This scan can take several hours, so please be patient

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start scanning button. A window will pop up.
Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan
When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
Click Automatic cleaning
When cleaning has finitished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post along with a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.
If I've saved you time & money,
please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you! You can donate using a credit card and PayPal. Thank you!

Hello kaizen,

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer and SpySweeper before using Hijackthis.

Please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0005-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_05) -

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix checked"

*******************************************

*NOTE* CCleaner deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Let's empty the temp files:

Run CCleaner.

*******************************************

Reboot your computer, post a new Hijackthis log, and tell me how your computer is running.
