Hi megab10. This log has some real formatting problems. Let's try posting a new one that is properly formatted. Start HijackThis and click the Do a system scan and save a log button to perform a scan and create a log file. When the scan is complete, Notepad will open up with the log file in it. While in Notepad, press Ctrl-A to select all text and then Ctrl-C to copy the text to the clipboard.

POST the log in this thread using the Add Reply button. Click in the data-entry window and press Ctrl-V to paste the log into the window. Add any other comments which you believe might be helpful in our analysis. and click the Add Reply button.

I will review your log when it comes in.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL I CHECK THE LOG, AS SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

OT,
First let me start by saying Thank you so very much for you help.
Just to give you some history, I have been working on this for 2 days and been to what seems to be hundreds of sites. Following problems with "Home Search Assistent" and "VX2" I have followed instructions and hopefully in doing so did not make some really devastating changes to my computer that I should not have with all the scans and deletes.

Here is my new log:

Hi megab10. Since I am not sure what you have done so far and it appears that there are some files left over let's start from the beginning.

Run AboutBuster and save the logs:

Download About:Buster.zip and unzip it to its own directory.
  • Browse to where you saved AboutBuster and run AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the directions Read: Important! prompt.
  • Click the Update button to check for updates and install any that are available.
  • Click "Start" and then "OK" to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click "Yes" at the About:Buster prompt to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • Please wait while AboutBuster scans your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click "Save Log...". Make sure you save it as I will need a copy of it.
  • Click "Exit" and "Exit" again to exit AboutBuster.
Post the AboutBuster log file back here and I will review it when it comes in.

Cheers.

OT,
I followed the instructions you sent me.
I downloaded and ran aboutbuster. Checked for updates and then ran a scan.
The first scan froze up on me. although I do remember the screen showing that there were no ADS found and it did remove some dat files and I believe a couple of .dll file but not 100% sure on that one. With my inexperience at this I was not clever enough to write down the file names.
I downloaded aboutbuster again, checked for other updates and ran a second scan, showed no ADS found, and no files came up this 2nd time but again it froze up on me. It gets to 100% and freezes and I can not do anything except end task.

I am sorry for messing this part up, hopefully there is something we can still do?

Look forward to hearing from you and again thank you for all your help. I truly appreciate it.

Hi megab10. Try running AboutBuster in Safe Mode. To boot into Safe Mode do the following:

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the boot menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Cheers.

Hey megab10. That log looks good. Can you send me a new HijckThis log please. I should have told you that with my last post. Sorry. Too many logs to work on today.

Cheers.

Hi megab10. Ok, we are down to a CWS infection so let's see if we can take care of that. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Download Cwshredder.exe and save it to a folder of its own. Start the program and click on the Check for Update button. If an update is available then download and install it. Close the program (do not run it yet).

Download CleanUp! and install it but do not run it yet.

Step #2

Part 1
  • Click Start>Run, type services.msc into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Locate the Workstation NetLogon Service service and click the Stop button.
  • In the Startup type dropdown select Disabled.
  • Click the Apply button and then the Ok button.
  • Close the Services window
Part 2
  • Click Start>Run, type cmd into the Open editbox and click the Ok button.
  • Copy/paste the line below into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key:
    • sc delete 11F#`I
  • If you get an error message then copy/paste this line into the Command Prompt window and press the Enter key:sc delete Workstation NetLogon Service
  • Close the Command Prompt window
Step #3

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Step #4

Make sure that all browser windows are closed, start CWShredder and click on the Fix-> button.

Now reboot your computer to finish the fix.

Step #5

Now we will remove some programs using Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel. Spyware Begone is considered a rougue application due to it's poor scanning performance and false positives to goad people into purchasing it. I recommend that you remove this program and get one of the better free ones I will give you in my cleanup post. You can check out suspect malware applications at the Clean and Infected File Sharing Programs link.
  • Click Start.
  • Click Control Panel.
  • Double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • Look in the Currently installed programs box for each program listed below and if it is there:
  • Click on it to select it.
  • Click Change (or Change/Remove) button.
  • If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.

Step #6

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\algau.dll/sp.html#94115
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\algau.dll/sp.html#94115
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = res://C:\WINDOWS\system32\algau.dll/sp.html#94115

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mfcii32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcii32.exe

O23 - Service: Workstation NetLogon Service ( 11F#`I) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wingz32.exe (file missing)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #7

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\system32\algau.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nthm32.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mfcii32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wingz32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\crkh32.exe

Step #8

Start CleanUp! and click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run to completion. It may take a few minutes depending on the size of your hard drive so be patient.

Step #9

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.
