The day after my son was playing the "free download" games from two "family/child friendly" sites, I started getting these alerts stating that my antivirus/spyware protection was not working. The first indicator is a message that pops up from my task bar. It says, "WARNING: Your current antivirus protection in not effective." It then goes on to say that some information was sent to xsearch.dll...?? When browsing the internet, every now and then, when navigating from one site to another, a web page pops up and says, "Warning - you infected by this site! Please, read our suggestions!" It then goes on to say that, basically, I need to purchase and download the "offered" antispyware. Almost immediately (when the web page appears), a pop-up box shows up and says, in the header of the box, "Windows Internet Explorer" The body of the text is verbatum as follows: "WARNING! Your PC possible infected due to visiting exploited (hacked) site, you must to download recommened antispyware application now!" I use the latest version of Trend Micro AntiVirus and AntiSpyware but, it has not been able to remove what I suspect is a Trojan of some kind.???. I also tried the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal tool and downloaded Defender. They each found different items of concern and handled them accordingly but, the "offers" and "warnings" still show up.

I'm running XP Professional, SP3 on a Dell Vostro 400. Someone suggested I try Combofix but, after reading the rules/suggestions on this site, I'll let the ones that are more familiar with computers make the suggestion(s).

Hi rangecoach.

Let's start here:

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Reagardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

After reading several other posts that appeared to be having the same issues, I ran MBAM, SAS and SDFix..several times. For right now, everything seems to be fine.

Here's the MBAM log. The SAS log is below.

If I'm reading this right, there was a Trojan "hiding" in the Dell Network Assistant file...makes sense because when I rebooted after the SDFix scan, the Dell Network Assistant kept looking for the file extension so it could load.

I know there's alot of info here but, if you see something out of whack, let me know. Thanks to you and all of the others that put forth the time and effort to help the humble masses...I know I really appreciate it.

Hello, you have removed alot of junk. Did you run the SAS from safe Mode? If not please do so.
Also the MBAM required a reboot to finish some removal. Please do so if you have not. Plus the MBAM is now up to versioin 1126+,so please update, rescan and post the new log...thanks

Yes, I ran SAS in safe mode and did another scan with MBAM version 1125 (log below). I also rebooted after running MBAM. I called Dell when the Network Assistant stopped "working" and they told me it was because the trial version had expired...???..it came installed with the software bundle....oh well, I didn't use or need it.

One quick note: After running MBAM (version 1122) and SAS, the "antivirus deluxe" web site and ineffective virus protection warnings still popped up. After running SDFix and then running MBAM (version 1125), it seemed to take care of it....or at least it hasn't shown up again.

Also, MBAM has been updated. Please download and install the most current version from here.

Then perform a new scan as you previously did and post the results.

The Kaspersky scan is 19% complete right now. I'll post it when it finishes...until then I'll be raiding the fridge.
