Hey guys... You have done great work for me in a previous life.. and now I trouble you with my friends PC
the first clue when he brought over his PC< was the changed background to one that said he had a virus.. never saw a trojan do that before

I have ran a few programs, anti -rootkit, virus removal, etc.. and have cleaned out about 680 items.. but their system still seems infected.

So i trouble you with this Hijack this! log.. and offer my thanks in advance.

Hello, coraan.
 to BleepingComputer.com

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)

I want to apologise that it has taken so long to get back to you. We on the HJT Team are working as fast as possible to get your log answered.

If you would still like help, please post a new HiJack This log below, as things may have changed on your system.

If you do not still need help, please let me know, so that I can move on to other users who still need help.

Please take note of the following:
  • While a HJT Team member is working with you, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
  • Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
  • Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave, and if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have "vanished" :).

Hello Billy O'Neal, thank you for your help.
As mentioned, I have been trying to fix my firends computer (and now my own, as it has developed the same infection).

I have been pretty successfull in running numerous tools, such as SUPERAntiSpyware, ATF Cleaner, Mcafee rootkitdetective, mbam, stinger, AVG and Spybot search and Destroy.. (spybot was not done on friends computer, as it requires an update first, and I do not have internet on their PC).

I would love to trouble you to look at a new HijackThis! log, and advise if there is any additional work to be done.
Also, if I could ask, please advise on what free protection we should use going forward (firewall, protection, etc) that should adequately protect and not be redundant, slowing system down further.

Thanks Billy. As said before, you guys rock. I will follow whatever counsel you provide.

Below is the HIJACK THIS! log from my computer, and then my friends computer.

Hello, coraan.
To avoid confusion, let's work on one machine at a time.

First lets make sure your machine is okay given that it's what you're posting with.

The HJT log for it looks free of malware, but it still does not look kosher.

Download and install an antivirus program, and make sure that you keep it updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software
Two good antivirus programs free for non-commercial home use are Avast! and Antivir
Two good paid for antivirus programs are NOD32 and Bitdefender
Note: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection level. It may also impair the performance of your PC.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)6 Update 7...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-Language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe
  • Follow the on screen instructions to install the latest Java version.
We need to clear out some temporary data.
Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. (This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only)Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

I would like us to use ESET (NOD32)'s Online Scanner
  • Please go to ESET OnlineScan (NOD32)
  • You will then see the Terms of Use, tick the check-box infront of YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Now click Start
  • Should you face a Security Warning that asks if you want to install and run a file called "OnlineScanner.cab", click Yes
  • Click Start
    • Note: (the Onlinescanner will now prepare itself for running on your pc)
  • To do a full-scan, tick: "Remove found threats" and "Scan potentially unwanted applications"
  • Press Scan
  • The Onlinescan will now start and scan your pc (this could take a while)
  • When the scan has finished, it will show a screen with two tabs "overview" and "details" and the option to get information or buy software, just close the window
  • Click Start >> Run... >> type: C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • The Scanresults will now open in Notepad
  • Click into the text area, right-click and chose "select all" (or use +A)
  • Right-click again and chose "Copy" (or +C)
  • Close/Exit Notepad
  • Navigate to this thread and post your log along with anything else requested from us, by right-clicking and "paste" (or ctrl+v) in the text area of the reply post you just created.
Note: For Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.)

You Need to Update Windows (And other Microsoft Software)
Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holes will allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.

If you are using Windows XP or earlier
Visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!

If you are using Windows Vista
  • Click the "Start Menu" (or Windows Orb)
  • Click "All Programs"
  • Click "Windows Update"
  • On the left, choose "Change Settings"
  • Ensure that the checkbox "Use Microsoft Update" at the bottom of the window is checked.
  • Press OK and accept the UAC prompt.
Note: You shouldn't need to check this checkbox every single time you update, only the first time.
  • Click "Check for Updates" in the upper left corner.
  • Follow the instructions to install the latest updates.
  • Reboot and repeat the "Check for Updates" until there are no more critical updates to install
In your next reply, please include the following:
  • ESET OnlineScan's Log
  • A new HJT Log

I followed the requested changes as much as i could.
However after installing AVAST! and removing my Java, on restart all I would get (after login screen) would be a black screen with a movable pointer. Interestingly, if I cntr-alt-delete, it would send me back to login screen with options, and if I chose task manager, I would then be back in the black screen, but with the task manager window (fully functional, which I could move around).

I restored back to a point 12 hours earlier that day, and could login in fine. Removed Java again, and then on a restart, have the black screen again.

I would welcome your advice, and thanks for your help.

Hello, coraan.
Go ahead and restore your system back one more time. Then use this scanner (NOT THE ESET ONE)

alas the system restore still does not solve my problem of no working desktop. On both my computer and my sons PC, I do not have a taskbar, icons or key Commands like the start key. In the task manager that I can bring up on both PCs, there is no explored.exe running

Let me know what you think I should do, and I will try it!

Alright.. start the task manager, press "New Task", and type in "Explorer.exe" manually.

Let me know if that works. If it doesn't, we can take more drastic measures ;)

sorry
Limited access. In fact I type this on my phone.
I've been trying to get explored.exe back on my Pc and my sons pc, both of which this hapned after putting Avast and new java on both systems.
I cannot get task manager now on my Pc. My sons runs Xp and the task manager does not offer the top menu options.

I look forward to your advice on a more drastic solution, as you mentoned.
Or I can just make both the explorer free hard drives into secondary drives on the pcs.
If we would focus on my friends hijack log instead.

Let me know what you think is best and I will follow your lead.

Alright... you will need access to a clean machine. You can possibly get one at your local library or something of that nature.

Please download the following files from a clean machine and burn them to CD.

DO NOT USE A FLASH DRIVE, ENSURE YOU USE A CD!

The flash drive is likely how the infection is getting spread around, and we don't want that to cause you problems.

Note that we will not need all of these tools now, but since you probably have to go to another location to download these files, I have thrown a few borderline on needed ones

The files are:
  • ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe <-- save this as "cureit.exe" on the cd
  • http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.exe <-- save this as SmitFraudFix.exe to the CD
  • http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe <-- Save this as ComboFix.exe to the cd
  • http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html <-- Save this as mbam.exe to the cd
  • http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/database/mbam-rules.exe <-- Save this as mbam-rules.exe to the cd
Now reboot the first infected machine (one at a time for now please) into "Safe Mode with Command Prompt". Press F8 just after the computer starts, just like entering safe mode, but instead choose "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"

Now place the disk into the CDRom drive of the infected machine.

When the prompt opens, type
<yourdriveletter>:
where your drive letter is the letter for the CDROM you are using.

Then type in
copy /Y .\mbam.exe "%userprofile%\Desktop\mbam.exe"

press enter. Then type in
copy /Y .\mbam-rules.exe "%userprofile%\Desktop\mbam-rules.exe"

And press enter.

Next:
copy /Y .\ComboFix.exe "%userprofile%\Desktop\ComboFix.exe"

And finally
"%userprofile%\Destop\ComboFix.exe" /killall

This will start ComboFix. When it has finished, it will produce a log. Please paste the log back here if you can from this machine after running CF.

Good luck!

I have the files now on a CD ( wow, didnt know USB sticks could cause such problems!)
I will work your solution tonight.
I know on one PC< I have a problem where in the starrtup, I cannot change my selections by use of the up down left right arrows.. for some reason they do not work, although the f8 and return works.

Will update tommorow with results.

Thanks Billy, that worked great! My sons PC has a desktop again, and I am writing this from that PC.
Enclosed below is the requested combofix log for his PC.

On my PC, when I try to start the system under the selection of safe mode with command prompt, it lists through the screen a lot of data (standard safe mode stuff), but then the screen blacks out, and the system restarts, bringing me back to the same selection screen where i chose safe mode with command prompt. What do you think?

Here is my sons PC log... thanks again for your continued help to get me up and running.

Hello

On my PC, when I try to start the system under the selection of safe mode with command prompt, it lists through the screen a lot of data (standard safe mode stuff), but then the screen blacks out, and the system restarts, bringing me back to the same selection screen where i chose safe mode with command prompt. What do you think?

One PC at a time please.. they are separate cases that I will be unable to deal with combined like this. Since your son's machine is actually working now, please stick to that one for now. We'll deal with the other one once things are cleaned up. I just don't want to get confused as to which machine we are working on at present time.

2008-09-21 17:53 . 2008-09-21 18:52 <DIR> d-------- C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner

Can you see if a log got produced in this directory? Should be C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. If it's there, please post the contents of it here.

Also please post a fresh HJT log from that machine either way :)

EDIT: please take the hjt log from Normal mode, not safe, if that is possible :)

Thanks!
