Hi,

This trojan came in via an emailed zipped file. The email address was spoofed showing a site owner's name that I knew was updating his membership site software. I know better but was tired and clicked and installed the thing.

Here's what I know about it so far:

1. Trojan Hunter displays a warning when opening "The entry in your system registry that specifies how to open an executable file is not set to "%*" %1 as it should be, but instead has the value "C:\WINDOWS\microsoft kit\lsass.com "%1 %*'. Some trojans alter this key to make themselves autostart'.

2. The microsoft kit folder mentioned above was created when I downloaded the trojan. It contains a file called 'keyed' that's the keystroke log. It also contains half a dozen screenshots of my PC. If you delete 'keyed' it reappears in seconds.

3. I had spybot and NAV when this started. I've sinced switched to Panda 2005. I was using Windows firewall. Now I've got Sygate. Sygate is preventing lsass.com from sending out data. It tries every ten minutes to connect to minimovics.redirectme.net
[65.32.32.124].

4. I've been on this for a few days and nobody seems to know what to do. A volunteer over at majorgeeks.com had me fix certain lines (like this one:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0494D0D1-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - (no file) using hijack this but they keep reappearing. (And system restore is turned off.) None has worked and he's throwing in the towel.

Here's the log:

Hi Bill and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0494D0D1-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - (no file)

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #2

We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\microsoft kit\ <--folder
Step #3

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into the new document:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
@="\"%1\" %*"

Save the document to your desktop as exefix.reg and close Notepad. Locate the exefix.reg file on your desktop and right-click on it. Select Merge and answer Yes or Ok to any prompts.

Step #4

Download CleanUp! and install it. Start CleanUp! and click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run to completion. It may take a few minutes depending on the size of your hard drive so be patient.

Step #5

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi OT,

Some good news and some bad news. First, the good news.
The virus files didn't reappear in the Hijack this scan for the
first time since I've been working with this thing.

The bad news is pretty bad. I've got no file associations.
Once I did the initial Fix with Hijack this, I couldn't even open
the text editor to complete the next step without telling windows
where to find my text editor.

When I rebooted, I had othing in my system tray, including Sygate
firewall loaded. Fortunately, I'm using my laptop to communicate with
you. I unplugged the desktop from the network until this is fixed so I
don't pick up a new virus or hack since my machine is wide open.

What should I do next?

Hi Backstage1. Try this. Download xp_exe_fix.reg and put it on a disk. Bring it to the other machine and open My Computer. Navigate to the disk you put the reg file on (floppy or cd or whatever you put it on) and right-click on the file. Choose Merge and answer Yes or Ok to any prompts to merge it.

Post back here with your results.

Cheers.

Hi Old Timer,

Well, I thought we had it but not quite. The computer is back to recognizing file associations and the system tray is loaded, etc. While the Microsoft Kit folder is still not there, the computer is still bogged down.

For starters, when I rebooted after applying your registry changes, Spybot's tea timer popped up once again to get my permission to make three changes to the registry. These are changes that were made early on when I was getting help over on majorgeeks.com. Mainly a line taken out referring to NAV, which I'd replaced, another one of those nameless keys and a default home page line going to Dell.com.

I accepted the changes thinking that maybe now they'd stay gone. I noticed the computer still seemed sluggish so I shut it down completely and rebooted. Teatimer
came back with the exact same three files. Not good.

MS Outlook will come up but wasn't able to do a full sync with my exchange server. It's not the server as Outlook on my laptop is connected to it as well and it works fine.

So, I ran Hijack this again and, lo and behold, the same 4 'no name' BHO files and the DPF's that I keep deleting have returned. Here's the latest log.

Thanks, Old Timer. We'll get this one.

Bill

Hi Backstage1. Yes, sometimes TeaTimer will try and protect you a little too much. The good news is that the files are gone and so are not resident anymore. Let's do the following.

Step #1

Disable TeaTimer
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Uncheck Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.
Step #2

Start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0494D0D1-F8E0-41ad-92A3-14154ECE70AC} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {EBCDDA60-2A68-11D3-8A43-0060083CFB9C} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F1FABE79-25FC-46de-8C5A-2C6DB9D64333} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {08BEF711-06DA-48B2-9534-802ECAA2E4F9} -
O16 - DPF: {2BC66F54-93A8-11D3-BEB6-00105AA9B6AE} -
O16 - DPF: {49232000-16E4-426C-A231-62846947304B} -
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} -
O16 - DPF: {69A72A8A-84ED-4A75-8CE7-263DBEF3E5D3} -
O16 - DPF: {6B4788E2-BAE8-11D2-A1B4-00400512739B} -
O16 - DPF: {8DAE7A62-4632-4691-805C-0338A5F26F9D} -
O16 - DPF: {F54C1137-5E34-4B95-95A5-BA56D4D8D743} -

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #3

Reboot your computer.

Step #4

Enable TeaTimer
  • Run Spybot-S&D
  • Go to the Mode menu, and make sure Advanced Mode is selected
  • On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
  • Check Resident TeaTimer and OK any prompts
  • Restart your computer.
Step #5

Start HijackThis and perform a new scan. If TeaTimer puts the entries back in then we will need to completely uninstall Spybot S&D, make sure that the c:\program files\Spybot - Search & Destroy folder is completely deleted and then repeat the HijackThis fix. After that it will be safe to reinstall Spybot S&D.

Post your final log back here and I will review it when it comes in.

Hi Old Timer,

Btw, I feel funny typing that because according to your profile page, I was born in the same year as you.

Ok, the good news is that our entries didn't reappear. I did have to remove Spybot first (and Trojan Hunter too just in case). I'll reinstall those next.

The only major problem I'm seeing is that Outlook isn't working properly. It opens but hangs when doing an update. It's not blocked at the firewall so I'm not sure what the problem is.

I've definitely got web access. In fact, I'm typing this on my desktop, thank you. And I did a quick banking update with Quicken which worked fine.

Push comes to shove, I can reinstall Outlook. I use an Exchange server so the data will be there although it'll be a slow update as I've got a lot in there. I'd rather save that until we're sure there's not other cause so I'm not doing an install for naught.

Thanks for everything you've done so far. I'm about to send something your way via your Paypal link.

It's 3:30 here so I'm calling it a night and will check in the board in the morning. The current log follows...

All the best,

Bill

Hi,

I've got a P4 running Windows XP Pro.

I've been battling multiple trojans for a couple of weeks. Old Timer
helped me get rid of one but it appears there are more. My computer
runs very slow. At times it seems like the cursor is very slow to
respond and Outlook slows to a crawl.

No browser hijacking or anything along those lines. It behaves very
similarly to the keylogger we got rid of last week.

When I try to run Trend Micro's Free Scan when not in safe
mode, I can't check the 'my computer' box. If I try, nothing happens.
In safe mode, it ran and didn't detect anything.

When I tried to run Panda's online scan, it literally runs
three seconds and tells me no virus found. Normally, a Panda scan will
take several hours on my machine.

When I try to run virus detection on Symantec's site, after
loading definitions, I get a warning that says "Unable to run Virus
Detection", in order to run virus detection you must be using
Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher with ActiveX and Scripting
enabled." I'm running the latest MS Explorer and have all the
recommended activex and scripting enabled. Same results in regular and
safe mode.

Also, I installed Panda Titanium 2005 last week. The program
will not allow me to update to the latest version. When I do, it tells
me that I must first uninstall Norman Virus control. Don't have
Norman, never did and it's not in add/remove programs.

Panda's tech support told me they had a similar problem with another
customer. They felt a virus was simulating Norman Virus control to
prevent the latest version from loading. They suggested I run their
online scan. I've emailed them after the scan wouldn't run but haven't
heard back yet.

Ran McAfee Stinger and it didn't find anything.

Ran CC Cleaner.

Ran AdAware SE with VX2 Cleaner Plug-in, nothing found. I have
noticed on shutdown, brief warning notices saying something along the
lines of Centinel VXD could not be closed... This happens when doing a
shutdown. The window only displays briefly, it doesn't wait for a
response.

Spybot, which I regularly use, says the system is clean.
Everything is immunized.

CW Shredder found nothing.

Kill2Me reported that the Look2Me infection is about to be
removed, if it was present.

I wasn't having about:blank problems but ran the next two anyway.

About:Buster didn't find anything scanning twice. There was
this line but I don't know if it means anything:

ADS not scanned System(FAT)

HS Remove removed 8 items.

Rebooted in normal mode.

Tried to run Panda online scan again. Same result as earlier.

Ran RAV Antivirus scan. Results: Viruses found: 0
Suspicious files: 0 Disinfected files: 0 Mail files: 2 (not
sure what this means, no explanation given) Ran TrojanScan
online scan. (and note that TrojanScan's database was last updated
10/18/04!) 201,537 files scanned, 0 trojans detected.

Note: As I shut Trojan scan down and started a-squared, tea
timer gave me a warning that a value had been deleted for an ActiveX
Distribution unit. [2a32b14F-4d29-4ea3-ac54-e9b19f436ce7... (couldn't
see the entire key) Could only choose 'allow' as 'deny' was greyed
out. Microsoft AntiSpyware brought up an alert at the same time
telling me a script file C:\temp\unregister.bat was trying to execute.

A-squared - Scanned objects, malware files: 27 (all of these
were considered adware. In reality, they're all ebooks, one of which I
wrote myself. All have been on the machine long before this trojan
appeared)

Avast! Cleaner found no virus bodies but identified the
following files could not be scanned:
C:\Windows\System32\CatRoot2\edb.log
C:\Windows\System32\CatRoot2\test.edb

According to Microsoft, a corrupt edb.log file could cause some
programs not to install. So this could be our trojan or the cause of
the problems running the panda and other scans. Details:
http://support.m
icrosoft.com/kb/822798

Finally, I ran ADS Spy, or tried to, but it said it only works
on NTFS systems.

One last note, since this started, something keeps trying to access my
A: drive every 20 minutes or so. I rarely use the A drive but the
rattling noise this makes is annoying. I thought it might be Panda but
it only checks the A drive when rebooting or shutting down and then
it's a silent scan.

Thanks in advance for your help,

Bill

Hi Backstage1. Good thing I took a peek at this one because I checked the other post and it doesn't seem like we finished that up. I did not get notified of your last post there on the 20th so I'll close that one so we can continue here.

Let's start with this:

Download rkfiles.zip and unzip it to its own permanent folder.

Important! Reboot in SAFE MODE !!

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
Locate the rkfiles.bat file and double-click it to run it. It will start scanning your computer and could take a little while so be patient. When the DOS window closes, reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt back here and I will review it when it comes in.

Actually, I think I'll just combine the 2 to keep them together.

Cheers.

Ok, I ran rkfiles. The log follows.

My computer is getting to the point where everything hangs up.
Just clicking on my computer locks it up. When I reboot, it hangs
on 'saving your...' and I have to hit the reset. When booting up again,
it takes 10 to fifteen minutes to finally get windows to completely open.

In safe mode, things are better but the safe mode boot is far slower than
normal, too.

Here's the log:

J:\My Downloads\Security\RKfiles

Hi Backstage1. Well that log looks clean also. We have ruled out viruses and malware at this point. Let's look at some other entires.

Start HijackThis and follow these steps:
  • Click on Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Check the checkbox for List minor sections (full)
  • Check the checkbox for List empty sections (complete)
  • Click on the Generate StartupList Log button
  • Click the Yes button to create the list
Post the StartupList back here and I will review it when it comes in.

Cheers.

Hi Old Timer,

I ran the scan you suggested. Before we rule out malware, let me tell you that when I reboot or shutdown when in normal mode, I get a windows message telling me a program hasn't shut down yet. Same warning you might see if Outlook hasn't shut down properly or another legit program.

Except it's telling me that it's Centinel Vxd that hasn't shut down yet. Isn't that a trojan?

There's also the Panda issue. I can't install the latest version. When I try, it tells me that I must first uninstall Norman Virus Control. Don't have it, never did. One tech guy at Panda told me that there may be a virus that's disguising itself some way as they have another customer with the same issue.

Unfortunately, Panda has no forum, they're very slow to respond to emails and you get a different person every time. So when I wrote back, I got a reply from someone that didn't read or understand my message. His response was that I needed to download and install the latest version. Gee, ya think?

Here's the log:

Hey Backstage1. Well, there is nothing in the startup log that shows any signs either, but, if you are getting a message regarding Centinel then we can check for that.

Look for the following files:C:\WINDOWS\System32\Server.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Olefiles\Server.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Olefiles\Svchost.exe

If you find any of them, then go to Jotti's malware scan and have them scanned. They will be scanned with a number of different scanners. Post the results back here in your next post.

If you find any of them then I will need to write up a registry file to remove the entries they create in the registry.

The only other lines in the Startup list that caught my attention were these:Bill Hibbler MicroKit = C:\WINDOWS\microsoft kit\lsass.com
Administrator MicroKit = C:\WINDOWS\microsoft kit\lsass.com

Microsoft Kit and lsass.com always make me take notice. Also, are you the Bill Hibbler of eCommerce fame? I think I've read some of your stuff over the years! You and Cory Rudl if memory serves me correctly.

Anyway, let me know what you find out about the above files and then we can go from there.

Cheers.

Hey Old Timer,

Look for the following files:C:\WINDOWS\System32\Server.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Olefiles\Server.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Olefiles\Svchost.exe

I don't have any of those three. I don't even have a folder in
Windows called "Olefiles".

That's the one you helped me get rid of to start with. I didn't pay attention to that last log I sent. Is lsass.com there again? I haven't seen the microsoft kit folder since we got rid of it and it's not there now unless it's hidden somehow.

Also, are you the Bill Hibbler of eCommerce fame? I think I've read some of your stuff over the years! You and Cory Rudl if memory serves me correctly.

That's me. EcommerceConfidential.com. I have a book on Corey called The Rudl Report (RudlReport.com). Thanks for reading my stuff!

Hopefully I'll write more some day if I can get this machine running again. :flowers: There's definitely something going on. Panda keeps asking me to activate its "protection against unknown threats" auto protect function. I do and then it tells me it's not enabled. That and the fact that I'm being prevented from upgrading to the latest version of Panda makes me very suspicious.

I know you deal with dozens of these problems every day and don't remember the details of mine but the kid that confessed to doing this initially said that what he planted (which his hacker friend turned him on to) could only be detected by Panda Titanium 2005.

Again, I'm at a loss. I'm building a new machine in a few weeks which is why I hate to take time out to fix this one but I don't have a choice. I've backed my documents and other files on to a USB hard drive. If I have to repair or reformat and reinstall, I will. One hassle with that is my xp is an upgrade, not a full version which I believe means I'd have to format and install Windows 98, then XP. Oh boy....

Thanks again. I'm open to suggestions but I've got to make a decision about repair or reinstall by the start of my day tomorrow. (It's 2:30 in Texas).

All the best,

Bill
