This is actually for my computer practical exam, we are using windows xp and the only tool that we could use is the task manager, but the thing is you can not launch anything using the file-run because what it does is it activates a batch file that will make the computer shut down, we are not allowed to boot to either safemode or safemode with command prompt. The only feature available for the task bar would be to end services that are running, no suspicious services are running but i noticed that when i browsed the folders, windows folder is not a folder but an application having the .exe extention name. My question is... how can you change the extention name of a folder without running any programs, i tried renaming the file while doing the browse also, i tried to run programs like ie which is not on the windows.exe folded.

if you are using autoruns, under option make sure to put a check mark on verify code signatures and hide microsoft entries, then on "Everything" tab, do a research on files that do not have publisher names on google or those that are on suspicious locations or suspicious names like xasdjkfadsa.dll, make a list of those files then you could either use avenger to delete those files on boot up or make a batch file or run in safemode (that is if those viruses won't run on safemode).
