Hi again and my apologies for posting to the wrong forum. It was unintentional as I am not a regular forum (any forum) user. Apologies. I believe I have the Antivirus XP 2008 virus after studying your link on: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/malware-re...nn-daily-top-10

---------------------------------------------------------
If the get_flash_update.exe or the adobe_flash.exe file is downloaded and installed on your computer, they will proceed to download further malware that are set to start on your computer automatically when you reboot. When the whole infection process is complete, you will notice a variety of changes have occurred. The first change you will notice is that your Windows desktop background has been changed to a warning stating that Spyware was detected on your computer. Next, your screen saver will be changed to use SysInternals BlueScreen Screen Saver, which when running, emulates your operating system crashing into a blue screen of death. Some of the messages that will appear on this blue screen are:

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
PANIC_STACK_SWITCH
MAXIMUM_WAIT_OBJECTS_EXCEEDED
NO_MORE_IRP_STACK_LOCATIONS
BAD_POOL_HEADER
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
BOGUS_DRIVER
SYSINTERNALS_GREAT_SITE
UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP

Though the screen saver will make it appear that your computer has crashed, and even make it look like your computer is rebooting, in reality it still is only a screen saver. Simply press the space bar and you will go right back to your desktop. The malware will also disable your ability to change your desktop or screen saver by modifying the Windows Registry so that the tabs to change these settings are not visible. Last, but not least, the CNN Daily Top 10 malware will also download and install a rogue anti-spyware program onto your computer. Currently the rogue being installed is one called Antivirus XP 2008. This program will automatically run and scan your computer. When done, it will display a variety of false risks on your computer that cannot be removed unless you first purchase the software. Please do not buy this software, but rather use the guide below to remove all of the malware installed by this SPAM.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have had the blue screen up a number of times with the majority of the messages above. After following your tutorial very successfully so fat to the letter, I am in the final stages of trying to clean my system and below is the logfile from Hijackthis. The only files I have been unable to remove to date are 4 files from Freeze Screensavers which are currently sitting in my Recycle Bin having been manually deleted. I have avoided restarting the computer unless directed to do so by your tutorial or by any of the downloaded programs advice.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for all your help to date. I would have not got this far without your invaluable tutorial. What do I now need to do at this stage. I still haven't restarted my Laptop. I have installed a trial version of Zonelabs Zone Alarm prior to beginning your tutorial which is running now. Prior to that I used Windows own antivirus software but have now disabled and deleted that.
Kind regards
Kate

Hello Kate,

Installing a firewall at this stage probably wasn't the best thing to do.
The lack of a proper antivirus protection is a more urgent issue.
For now, please uninstall the ZoneAlarm trial through Control Panel > Software.

Then :

1. * Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Under Browsing History, click Delete.
  • Click Delete Files, Delete cookies and Delete history
  • Click Close below.
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu..
  • Click the Clear now button below.. A new window will popup what to clear.
  • Select all and click the Clear button again.
  • Click OK to close the Options window
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
2. Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first (not for Windows Vista users !).
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode, in case your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. This allows us to help you. (WinXP SP3 users, please download the appropriate SP2 file, Home or Pro, to install the RC)

In the event you already have Combofix, and you're notified a more current version is available, please download the latest version as described in the tutorial.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

Note: Make sure not to click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Please post the log from ComboFix (can also be found as C:\ComboFix.txt) in your next reply.

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding !!

Greetings,
Thunder

Hello Kate,

Looking better now.

You can remove all used tools and folders created in the process.
To remove ComboFix :
Go to Start > Run, and copy and paste next command in the field:ComboFix /u
Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /u
Then press Enter.
This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, restore your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Your JavaVM is also out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update7.
  • Scroll down to where it says The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: Accept License Agreement
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe) and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Are you still having problems ?

Please post a fresh HijackThis log for final checkup.

Greetings,
Thunder

Hi Thunder

I can't thank you enough, truly. You're a lifesaver. My laptop seems back to normal and actually much faster than it was previously. I hope that has finally got rid of everything. I have posted the Hijack log below and my only questions are:

1. What Anti-Virus/Firewall programme do you recommend? I now have no Antivirus or Firewall having uninstalled the trial of Zone Alarm and deleted the Windows eVirus programme and I want to make sure I'm protected 100%. I'd appreciate your recommendations.

The Hijack log is below and I will definitely Donate. Thank you again

Kate

Hello Kate,

Just a few loose ends :

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, if still present :O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {EEE6C35B-6118-11DC-9C72-001320C79847} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0006-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_06) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0009-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_09) -

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

What concerns your protection :
I'd advise a free Antivirus scanner, firewall and a spywarescanner.
Please read this Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks.
To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

No more problems ?

Greetings,
Thunder

Hi again

Sorry to still have problems but I followed your instructions yesterday and my Laptop was running so much better and far quicker than before so I know we'd had success but on installing various recommended programs and reinstalling a trial version of Zone Alarm it suggested a 'deep scan' and detected a number of threats still present one of which it classified as serious: This was a P2P-Worm Win32.Logpole. which it classified as a Trojan. The others were associated with MyWeb and Websearch. I deleted all when prompted but my laptop hung on closing down. I did not want to attempt a reboot and am using another laptop to send this message.

The programs I installed were in the following order:

Spyware Guard
Spyware Blaster
Enough
Eulalyser
Zone Alarm Trial

Do you think you can advise me further. I'm at a total loss.

Much appreciation
Kate

Hello Kate,

I'd stay away from ZoneAlarm if I were you.
Although it's a good firewall it takes some tweaking to set everything perfect.
If you're using Kazaa or some other p2p program, you may have problems making a proper firewall rule,
and keep getting those P2P-Worm Win32.Logpole alerts.

When I look at your list, I'm wondering if you wouldn't be better off to get rid of all of those programs, exept for SpywareBlaster ?
Once removed from the Softwarelist, reboot your system.
Then install either the free version of Avira AntiVir or AVG8 (make sure you get the free version !),
update it and let it run a full system scan.
Next update your Spybot S&D, make sure TeaTimer and Immunisation are activated.
Finally, if you still have the need for a firewall, I'd try one of the less intrusive ones like Comodo, Agnitum or Sunbelt/Kerio.
DO NOT install anything else so those programs do not interfere with each other.
That should get your system running smoothly.

Greetings,
Thunder

Thank You Thunder

It all seems to be running smoothly now and I can breathe a sigh of relief at last.... I did exactly as you advised and so far so good.

I'll happily make a donation but also there is a snippet of a poem I remember from years ago and have never forgotten.... it is a quote about Freedom from Lord Byron, the famous poet.....

"Yet, Freedom! yet thy banner, torn, but flying, streams like the thunderstorm against the wind...."

Thank you again for all your time and dedication

With gratitude
Kate
