From startup, IE displays "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"

However, when I manually type in known good URL (i.e., www.microsoft.com), I get this error message:

The address is not valid

Most likely causes:
•There might be a typing error in the address.
•If you clicked on a link, it may be out of date.

Plus the URL in the address field (www.microsoft.com) was replaced with http:///

Events leading up to this problem

1. While browsing the net (via IE), got tagged by a trojan/hijacker virus (sgcxcxxaspf080825.exe) which ad-aware and spybot couldn't stop or remove.

2. Downloaded FileAssassin (via IE) to get rid of this .exe. Also not successful.

3. Tried to download BitDefender (via IE) but "security" would not allow the download. (I presume that the virus was doing the blocking.)

4. Downloaded BitDefender (via Firefox) and cleaned up hard drive. Some aspects of the trojan could not be erased but are being blocked.

5. After clean-up, computer connects to Internet, but IE cannot display webpages.

What I've done to correct this problem

1. Run "Diagnose Connection Problems", presented by IE. Tool checks ftp, http, and https; all connect successfully.

2. Tried all of the methods suggested in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926431.

3. Checked IPCONFIG settings.

4. Checked WINSOCK settings.

5. Uninstalled and reinstalled IE7.

Now I get an error message on Windows start up: Error loading C:\WINDOWS\wftadi16_080825a.dll. The specified module could not be found.

6. Updated all installations of Java and Flash.

7. Ran SFC/WFP; allowed SFC to pull original files from Win XP Pro CD.

8. Unchecked the following options in the Advanced Security setting in IE:
- check for publisher's certificate revocation
- check for signatures on downloaded programs
- Enable Integrated Windows Authentication

9. Reset all Security zones to default level.

10. Installed IE 8 beta.

11. Run http://secunia.com/software_inspector.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
You may also download the tool from Here or Here.
...save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application...follow the prompts when the installation begins.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from Here...then just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install them.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected. Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will display:
    "The scan completed successfully...
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer.
    (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy the contents of that report to paste into your next reply and exit MBAM.
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to allow MBAM to proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Failure to reboot when prompted will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
