Hi,

I have apparently got the Vundo / Vundomunde trojan virus. I have tried various tactics all weekend including the VUNDOFix.exe and the VirtumundoBeGone.exe downloadable fixes. My system normally runs Spyware Doctor with a current subscription and McAfee provided by Comcast is the Personal Firewall normally used. SD first found the virus on Friday, but could not remove it. I then proceeded to try various free scans including AVAST which has a boot time scanner. Still no luck. Everything seems to remove all but one or two .DLL files. I then found on the McAfee site instructions to download and install Process Explorer which allowed me to suspend winlog.exe, explorer.exe, and rundll32.exe. It then instructs to run a scan with these processes suspended. Still no luck. I have run scans with Adaware, Spybot S&D and Stinger in both Safe Mode and in Normal Mode with similar results. Also checked to see what version of JAVA is installed, but it apparently is not installed at all.

Symptoms include errors at windows log in, pop up window ads for security type software, very slow internet explorer (I'm accessing your site and doing research on my work laptop), Windows Automatic Updates has been disabled and can't be restarted, all Restore Points before infection have been deleted.

So here I am asking for help. Please Help!!

Thanks!
Tony Crabtree

Hello Tony,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

First you should know that you're actually doing more harm than good by running 2 Anti Virus programs. (Avast! and McAfee) When you do this both programs compete for resources, and the end result is neither does it's best and can cause system instability. I recommend that you choose the one you want to keep, update it, disable or uninstall the other one, and use it as an on demand only scan occasionally.

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: ouvkox.dll

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Reboot your computer.

I need for you to go offline completely and disable ALL your protective programs after you download ComboFix, but before you run it. Sometimes those programs interfere with it, and we don't want that! :)

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

OK. I thought I did disable all of them. I'll uninstall all of them except the McAfee/Comcast. It has the firewall that none of the others have.

Then what?

Unistalled AVAST, Adaware, Spybot, and Spyware Doctor. McAfee is still running but all processes are disabled. I think. Its GUI is rather cumbersome. Still disconnected from the internet.

Hello,

You can enable the one (McAfee). It's just that it's bad to have more than one running at a time.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

How is it running please?

Thanks,
tea

Tea,

Things seem to be getting better! None of the original symptoms are occuring now. Internet Explorer is loading pages faster than it has in months with no popups. And I have control over the windows updates again.

Do you think there is anything else that needs to be cleaned?

Thanks,
TC

Also, McAfee wants to install Microsoft .NET Framework1.1 to enable the McAfee Data Backup feature. Is this OK to install?

Thanks, TC

Hello there,

Is it McAfee telling you this? If so, then it's all right to install. If you have any doubts, then go to the Microsoft site itself and get it. Glad to know it's running better......let's see if we can make it a little better still :

Please delete ComboFix and its accompanying folder C:\Qoobox. Empty your Recycle bin and reboot your computer.

The following are not malware, but fixing them with HijackThis will improve your system's speed. None are necessary at startup, and may be started manually at any time. This is up to you. :)

Please run HijackThis! and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: ouvkox.dll

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Do a Windows search for the following file and delete it, if present:

ouvkox.dll

Reboot your computer.

Let me know how you come out. :)

Thanks,
tea
