I'm typing this on my fathers computer, apparently the lan- and internetsettings suddenly changed without any obvious reason. Following after this, Norton av. 2004 stopped working, live update did work, but scanning wasn't possible.

Ofcourse my unknowing father didn't ask me to take a look and started fidling around with the computer himself.. wich most likely didn't do any good. Now he needs my help, but since i don't know what he has done since the problem first emerged.. well..... *sigh*

Anyway, this is what hé told me he did after the problem emerged:

He downloaded a trial of norton av 2005, this also didn't work. Only then hé uninstalled both norton 2k4 and 2k5, and reinstalled 2k4, wich still doesn't work, even after downloading all the updates using 'live-update'.

Using a program called 'hitman pro' he scannend the comp with spybot s&d, add-aware, and updated spywareblaster.

Still without results.

I made a scan with hjt, can you plz help me if there's something in it. I would really apreciate it. Also, can you tell me if 'Hitman Pro' is any good..?? It runs the programs spybot, spywareblaster and add-aware automaticly, and i'm not sure if it misses stuff and such... I just do it manually on my own pc.

Hi AkaAlias and welcome to the BC forums. After reviewing your log I see a few items that require our attention. Please print these directions and then proceed with the following steps in order.

Step #1

Start in Safe Mode Using the F8 method:
  • Restart the computer in Safe Mode.
  • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe Mode menu item.
  • Press the Enter key.
We need to make sure all hidden files are showing so please:
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known types option.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
Step #2

Find the following files/folders and delete them (don't worry if they are already gone):C:\WINDOWS\System32\pdfupd.dll
wbsys.dll (search for this file and delete it (see the note below regarding searching in XP)

Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

Step #3

Reboot normally, start HijackThis and click the Scan button to perform a scan. Look for the following items and click in the checkbox in front of each item to select it:R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Popup Defence Updater] regsvr32 /s C:\WINDOWS\System32\pdfupd.dll
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: NVDESK32.DLL,wbsys.dll

Now close ALL open windows except HijackThis and click the Fix Checked button to finish the repair.

Step #4

Download CleanUp! and install it. Start CleanUp! and click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run to completion. It may take a few minutes depending on the size of your hard drive so be patient.

Step #5

OK. Reboot your computer normally, start HijackThis and perform a new scan. Use the Add Reply button to post your new log file back here along with details of any problems you encountered performing the above steps and I will review it when it comes in.

Ok, thanks for your help!

Couldn't find C:\WINDOWS\System32\pdfupd.dll
Did find 'wbsys.dll' but couldn't delete it. I could delete it after the hjt scan and removal of the lines you told me to remove.

Checked all the lines you told me in hjt, but after i clicked 'fix checked' an error occured saying:

'An unexpected error occured at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: NVDESK32.DLL,wbsys.dll)
Error #5 - Invallid procedure call or argument'

I rescanned with hjt, and all lines you told me to delete were gone.

Downloaded CleanUp and runned it. Rebooted, scannend with hjt wich gave me the following log:

Hi AkaAlias. Your log is clean. Good job! How are things running? Any problems?

We have a couple of things to do now that you are clean but before we get to those I want to inquire about your Norton Antivirus. Have you tested this and verified that it is working properly? If it is not working properly then uninstall it and reinstall it again. The reason it was not running properly at the beginning was probably due to the infection disabling it so I want to make sure that it is woking properly now before we close this topic. Please update it and then run a full system scan to ensure that everything is as it should be.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
* CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
[/list]System Restore will now be active again.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.
  • SpywareGuard to catch and block spyware before it can execute.
  • IESpy-Ad to block access to malicious websites so you cannot be redirected to them from an infected site or email.
You should also have a good firewall. Here are 3 free ones available for personal use:and a good antivirus like the one you are currently using. It is critical to have both a firewall and an anti-virus application and to keep them updated.

To keep your operating system up to date visit monthly. And to keep your system clean run these free malware scanners
weekly, and be aware of what emails you open and websites you visit.

Norton is still not workin, after reinstall.. thanks for your help, but i'm probably going to give the damn thing a fresh install of xp one of these days.

Hi AkaAlias. Norton might not have uninstalled completely when it was uninstalled. Norton is known for this. Go to Removing your Norton program using SymNRT and follow the directions for completely removing it. Once it is completely removed, reinstall only the version you want to keep and try it again.

What happens when you try to scan? Do you get an error message? Does it do anything or does it just not run?

NOthing happens when i start norton, also system restore doesn't work and windows update.. i'm currently scanning with some online virus scanners waiting for the results.

Hmmm. Try the Norton removal tool to remove Norton and then do a reinstall. To fix the Recycle Bin and Updates problem try this command:sfc /scannow
That will start the System Fle Check utility to verify that all of the correct system files are present.
