My auto online activation for my XP Pro has passed its limit. Its a store bought copy OEM as I loathed Vista.
I did a clean install and got message to Activate before I could LOG-ON. As I have to install drivers needed to connect, I gave up trying, luckily I had Image Back Up made using Norton Ghost or I would be up the creek without a paddle.
Help re activating after clean install required PDQ

Tell it to activate, when it fails it'll give you the option to use the telephone to activate.
Call Microsoft and have them activate it over the phone.
Make sure that you confirm that this is the only copy of XP and it's only installed on one system.

Ethernet is NOT the only way to activate...phone activations works quite nicely when a NIC is not yet set up.

Attempting to activate online will bring up the phone activation information.

We cannot assist with the defeating of the activation process.
