My hard drive started to make a knocking noise and I'm scared it may be the beginning of the end for it. Realizing I have never done a backup I paniced and downloaded a 3rd party software that is suppose to do backups. Before I installed it I scanned it with Kaspersky 7.0. It didn't find anything so I went ahead with the install. After the install it asked to restart the pc. I did and when windows started back up it asked for a password. I have never had a password on this pc so I can no longer sign in. I tried to start up in safe mode but it asks for password there too. I also used the recovery disc to try to repair or reinstall xp and was told that it couldn't find a hard drive.

I also downloaded this:

It allowed me to boot off their cd and to remove current passwords. When I then restarted it afterwards, the same thing happened. So maybe the virus changes it every start up?

So did i lose my hard drive or do I have a virus? I have never lost a hard drive but I can't imagine it doing this if I did. On this PC i have a partitioned drive with the os on the c portion, d is the balance of that drive and I have another internal drive E. I also have an external drive connect BUT i havent' had it powered up this entire time.

I have posted this in the Windows XP forum for help as well.

Thanks in advance for anything you can do for me!!!
