Followed all Prep Guide per 'boopme'. Could not update Bitscanner, ran scan anyway.
Thunderbird put all deleted emails since January in inbox, I deleted them, this repeated, then Thunderbird deleted all new emails in inbox. Infections first found by Kaspersky scan. Run Norton Internet Security 2007 nightly, full scan, Spybot several times a week, Adaware SE Plus on Startup and none of these infections were ever found. Also use Advance Windows Care 2 weekly and Advance system optimizer. Computer running well until week or so ago, still running now, but jerky and much slower. Recently installed SonicMyDVD by mistake and unable to delete yet.

Compac Presario 6000 series, 2002, 1.80 Gigahertz, 1G Ram. Hard drive 75% free.

Hello, whatsup.
 to BleepingComputer.com

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)

I want to apologise that it has taken so long to get back to you. We on the HJT Team are working as fast as possible to get your log answered.

If you would still like help, please post a new HiJack This log below, as things may have changed on your system.

If you do not still need help, please let me know, so that I can move on to other users who still need help.

Please take note of the following:
  • While a HJT Team member is working with you, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
  • Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
  • Old topics are closed after 3 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave, and if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have "vanished" :).

Hello

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Posted Image

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Posted Image

Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

 Hi Billy
I downloaded combofix.exe, although it did not give me a screen to rename the file as instructed by you, it just downloaded it.
I then went to the microsoft link and could not see where to download the next thing. Below is what I see. Where have I gone wrong? When I click on "Windows XP service pack 2", it takes me down to the instructions. where is the download link? Sorry to be so clueless. I don't believe my floppy drive or cd drive work, but I do have an external cd/dvd rom that I use. It does not seem like your instructions want me to make any disc copies, so I am dazed and confused. And a bit tired so I will wait for your answer and check tomorrow. Thanks again so much for helping me. I truly appreciate it.

MORE INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
You can obtain Windows XP Setup boot disks from Microsoft, but only by download. We provide the Setup boot disks so that you can run the Setup program on computers that cannot use a bootable CD-ROM. If you can start your computer from a CD-ROM or from a network-based installation, we strongly recommend that you use those installation methods instead.

Future products will no longer support installation by using the Setup boot disks. Installation of future Microsoft operating systems will require the ability to start from the CD drive or by using PXE boot from the network. For more information about how to use PXE boot, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc782281.aspx (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc782281.aspx)

How to obtain a replacement disk
If you bought Windows XP in the last 30 days, you may be able to return it to the store where you bought it to obtain a replacement under the Microsoft 30-Day Money Back Guarantee. Check the packaging for information about the 30-Day Money Back Guarantee.

Also, to obtain a replacement disk, telephone the Microsoft Order Desk at (800) 360-7561, and request a replacement for your damaged disk. If you are outside the United States, contact the Microsoft subsidiary for your area. To locate your subsidiary, visit the following Microsoft World Wide Offices Web site:
http://www.microsoft.com/worldwide/ (http://www.microsoft.com/worldwide/)

MORE INFORMATION
Who should download the Setup disks?
You should download the Setup disks if all the following conditions are true:
You are installing a new, full retail version of Windows XP.

Note An upgrade installation of Windows XP does not require the Setup disks.
You have a working CD drive, but you cannot start your computer from your CD-ROM.
You can start your computer from a floppy disk drive.
Note The Windows XP installation CD-ROM is a startup disk and can be used to start Windows. When you use the Windows XP installation CD-ROM to start your computer, you can use the Windows Recovery Console to help recover the system software. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
314058 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058/) Description of the Windows XP Recovery Console

Steps to download, create, and use the Setup disks
There are six Windows XP Setup boot floppy disks. You must have the files and the drivers that these disks contain to access the CD drive and to start the Setup process.
Step 1: Download the Setup disk program
Download the version of Setup disks that corresponds to your version of the Windows XP CD-ROM. The version should be displayed on the CD-ROM disk, and the version will indicate if a Service Pack is included.

Step 2: Run the Setup disk program to create the Setup disks
When you download the Setup disks, the download contains only one large program file. When you run the downloaded file, it extracts the files. You receive the following message:
This program creates the Setup boot disks for Windows XP. To create these disks, you need to provide 6 blank, formatted, high-density disks.

Please specify the floppy drive to copy the images to:
Type the drive letter for the floppy disk drive (this is typically drive A). After you type the floppy disk drive letter, you receive the following message:
Insert one of these disks into drive drive letter:. This disk will become the Windows XP Setup Boot Disk.

Press any key when you are ready.
When you press a key, the downloaded file starts to extract and copy the files. Continue to insert the blank disks as you are prompted to do this until all six disks are created. If the process is interrupted, you must run the downloaded program file again to create all six disks.

Make sure that you label each disk appropriately with the number that is specified by the program. You must use the disks in the correct order during the Setup process.
Step 3: Start your computer by using the first Setup disk to begin a new Windows XP installation
After you create all six disks, insert the first disk in the floppy disk drive, and then restart the computer. The computer must be configured to start from the floppy disk drive. You may have to modify the BIOS settings on your computer to do this.

The Setup process starts. Insert the other floppy disks when you are prompted. You must use the Windows XP CD-ROM to finish the Setup process.

Hello, whatsup.
You appear to have a Registry Cleaner installed!
The following is referring to Uniblue Registry Booster 2, PC Pitstop Optimize
Please be aware that bleepingcomputer staff do not recommend the usage of registry cleaners / tools due to the following facts:
  • Registry tools can cause irreparable damage to your Operating System
  • Registry tools can, as a result of the above, render your pc to be inoperable.
This is done, assuming that the major audience here at this board might be inexperienced users and thus a suggested safeguard from our side.
If you feel you have the need for a registry cleaner, then you are just as welcome to keep it. This is what we refer to an "optional fix" and is up to the user, so just take this as a recommendation from my side.

We need to preform operations on your registry.
  • Please open Notepad by opening a run prompt and typing in "notepad" and pressing enter, or navigating to Start -> Accessories -> Notepad.
  • Copy the text in the codebox below by selecting all of it and going to Edit -> Copy, or by pressing <Control> + C.
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer]
    "NoResolveSearch"=-
  • Return to notepad and paste the text in by going to Edit -> Paste or pressing <Control>+V.
  • Save the file to your desktop as "fix.reg" (including quotes)
Note: You must include the quotes!
  • Double click the "fix.reg" file we created earlier on your desktop.
  • Accept (Press Yes) to any prompts you receive.
We have to remove some entries in HiJack This
  • Please re-open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below:
    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {855F3B16-6D32-4fe6-8A56-BBB695989046} - (no file)

  • Close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.
In your next reply, please include the following:
  • A New HiJack This log

Hi Billy3
Thank you for the info on registry cleaners. I am very happy to uninstall every single thing I have that you think is not good for me to have on the computer! I thought I had unistalled uniblue with revounistaller, but alas not. Maybe once you have graciously cleaned up my mess, you might be willing to look over what I have installed and recommend what to get rid of. Even if it is something I have paid for, like norton! I am so grateful for your help. Thankyou, Diane

Hello, whatsup.
We need to execute a Batch File
  • Go to Start -> Run, and type "notepad" into the box.
  • Press ok.
  • Copy and paste the following code into notepad:
    regedit /e "%userprofile%\Desktop\Log.txt" "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects"
    start "" "%userprofile%\Desktop\Log.txt"
    del "%0"
    del "%userprofile%\Desktop\Log.txt"
    del fix.bat
  • Go to File -> Save
  • To the right of "Save as Type:" in the bottom of the window, change the ComboBox to "All Files"
  • Enter fix.bat into the "File name:" box just above the "Save as Type" box.
  • Double click fix.bat on your desktop.
A log file will open. Please ATTACH that log to your next post

Sorry to be clueless on this, but is ATTACH that log, the same as copy and paste? If not, now do I do that.

Hi Billy3

I follow 1-7 of previous instructions.
When I double clicked the fix.bat icon, the black window flashed for a second and another window appears that said "Cannot find the c:\Documents and Settings\Diane and John\Desktop\log.txtfile
Do you want to create another file?" A blank notepad appears at the same time.

What now?

Thankyou

Diane

Is this what you wanted me to me to do? I don't know how to ATTACH, but I see the feature for it below this box. If you don't mind give the instructions on how to ATTACH, rather than copy and paste and I would love to give it a go. Thanks again Billy, Diane
