I think I caught some spy ware from some watch TV online website. Whenever i would turn on my computer and check the windows task manager, the internet explorer process (iexpore.exe) would be running yet the application would not be open. Whenever i would end the process it would just re-open. While the iexpore.exe process would run i would get annoying random sound clips saying "congratulations you have won a free apple ipod", "congratulations you have won a walmart gift certificate", etc... yet there would be no pop up windows. Additionally pop ups would occur.

I ended up running Ad-aware, Spybot, and Mcafee virus scans and cleared alot of trojans/adware from the system yet this problem was not fixed. I ended up getting fed up with this problem so i just removed internet explorer from my computer using the add/remove programs tool in the control panel because i only use firefox anyway.

After I did this iexplore.exe still managed to run. I receive error messages saying "An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist" with the button "ok" underneath. When i click ok like over 50 blank internet explorer windows would open. Additionally i get error messages saying "windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item" with an ok box underneath as well. When i click ok the same result occurs. This error occurs pretty frequently when i leave my computer idle for a while.

I'm running Windows XP home edition

My computer has been slow/acting weird for a while but this is making my computer use just frustrating. Right now I'm just wondering if my problems are fixable or whether or not i should go ahead and reformat my computer.

I would appreciate any help you could give me

Any way, here is my hijack log:

Hi

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer
  • Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
  • If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
    select
    Advanced Mode
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools
  • Then click on the Resident icon in the list
  • Uncheck
    Resident TeaTimer
    and OK any prompts.
  • Restart your computer

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
