ECS 661FX-M mobo; P4/2.5

My PC freezes every 2 sec for 2 secs. If LAN connection is on and you reboot the pc, then you may not get the LAN connection again - repair didn't work.

I ran Eurosoft CD on memory, mobo etc and they are fine.

I went to SafeMode w/ Networking and was able to (Win XP) restore (restore failed on regular mode) to a point in July (it was freezing in the SafeMode too) and it still freezes up.

Used Ghost to recover to a prior backup - nothing changed. Ran Kaspersky and it didn't detect anything.

Soon after building the pc, there was minor freezing and MS asked me to remove the "temp" folder as files are corrupted and it worked. Now I did remove the two temp folder contents but no difference.

Need help pls.

Only error msg I see is:
Event ID: 7011
Source: Source Control Manager

Right now there is no freezing - NIC is not in the radar at all - not even as an uninstalled device.

Ran Eurosoft again and it didn't find anything, except it failed to find the seek time on a DVD rom.

If you've had problems since building...there's a strong possibility of a hardware problem that you are ignoring.

If it was me, I'd run a diagnostic (Memtest) on the RAM as currently configured.

Not to slam the software you used...but I don't believe in the "one-size fixes all" philosophy of computer troubleshooting .

Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic - http://www.memtest86.com/

If you run it and get no errors, your RAM is good. It takes about 2 hrs, 45 minutes to run a complete pass on this system, but I suspect that 1 hour without errors is as good as the full test.

All probs are fixed except:
NIC: Code 10 - This device will not start

I tried update driver and this is what happening - I already re-installed NIC drivers from Manuf web site.

PS: Ran memtest and no issues.

Went into SafeMode and looked under hidden devices - see the attachment of the print screen

It has only one built in NIC - I tried a realtek pci NIC card which also had a yellow asterisk and I removed it.

I followed the instruction but stuck on step 6 (see below):
4. Click Device Manager. The NIC should show in the "Network Adapters" category. *If it has a "+" next to it, click it once so it becomes a "-" and the card should show right below it
5. Double-click on the description; this will open the cards properties
6. Click on "Resources"

I can't find the "Resources" - where is it exactly - it is a XP

From this page: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite/Downloads...=82&LanID=0
it appears that you have an SiS NIC - have you tried the drivers from the above page? As hamluis' link states - the most common reasons for a NIC not to work are either bad drivers or a bad NIC.

Drivers are good - I tried the drivers from ECS.

After reading others experience, I am thinking that it is the faulty NIC - when it was dying, my pc started freezing every 2mins for 5secs. I don't see the green light but unsure weather the built-in NICs also have the green light.

Most newer NICs have the light - but I can't be sure about the older one's. Since you've used the appropriate drivers, then I'd have to suspect the NIC. You can get a new one for $5 to $15 US depending on where you shop - and installation is easy.

In my section of the US thunderstorms are frequent - and we lose a lot of NIC's because no one thinks to put a surge protector on their network. I lost 3 cards through lightning strikes until I figured it out. So I put surge protectors on my cable internet and on the network cables and haven't lost a NIC since (it's been 3 years!)
