Have a Vundu Trojan infection causing internet explorer ad popups (even though internet explorer isn't running). (while running all the processes you suggest, i also saw detection of a Crypt Trojan, and Starware)

went through all your steps prior to posting except for windows OS update (i have SP2, and got notice that SP3 is available). didn't want to risk a major update with a crippled PC

here is the Hijack log

Thanks!!

Hello jazzcat,

I apologise for the delay, the forum is busy.

(while running all the processes you suggest, i also saw detection of a Crypt Trojan, and Starware)

Where did you saw that detection? Any more details, like file names?

went through all your steps prior to posting except for windows OS update (i have SP2, and got notice that SP3 is available). didn't want to risk a major update with a crippled PC

You did well, you can update later, after you are clean.

If you still need help, post a new HijackThis log.

thanks for the reply!

unfortunately i no longer remember when/ where i saw the crypt etc info (seems like every program i ran found lots of stuff - strange since i never use P2P or any high-risk activities)

this time SpyBot found (and cleaned) something new (another trojan?) : Win32.Agent.ark
C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\Uyk8OI20.exe
and
C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\hD0Q2pQb.exe

However, Vindu is still present and indicated by other apps

Here is my current Hijack file:

You aren't running Anti Virus Software

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network.
Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently.  Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software (for personal use), from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.

Update and run your newly installed Anti-Virus, and post back a new HijackTis log.

IDISK STUFF:

this may be from some time ago when i tried to share info on my home network with my Mac computer

NO ANTIVIRUS PROTECTION:

weird. i had Spybot installed when i ran that Log (it gives a popup for permission whenever a new app is installed)

ANTIVIR:

downloaded it & ran it (i selected all the defaults on everything it found (Quarantine, mostly)). it picked up WinAgentark, TR/Crypt, and TR/Trash Gen trojans. Didn't see any Vundu reference(??)

looks like it also removed SpyBot in the process. see attached HIJACK Log

thanks!

Hello jazzcat,

So you don't need that 01 Hosts line now? May i remove it?
Is any program referring to it, so you can uninstall it?
If yes and you don't need it, please do so and let me know.

i had Spybot installed

You still have it.
Spybot is for Spyware, and it's not an Anti-Virus.
It's a very good program, but Anti-Virus is a must, to protect your pc from Virusses.

downloaded it & ran it (i selected all the defaults on everything it found (Quarantine, mostly)). it picked up WinAgentark, TR/Crypt, and TR/Trash Gen trojans. Didn't see any Vundu reference(??)

Some of those names are differently named Vundo infection.

Now you have the Anti-Virus we can continue!
----------------------------------------------
RENAME HIJACKTHIS

There is some infection hiding in your log.

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to:
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to scanner.exe

Do not run HijackThis now.
----------------------------------------------
REMOVE VIEWPOINT

You have Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. These programs are not malware but are considered as foistware instead of malware since they are installed without user's approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove them.

To uninstall the the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):
  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight >>Viewpoint component<< , click Remove.
  • Do the same for each Viewpoint component.
----------------------------------------------
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.

Spybot S&D's tea timer normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.

First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
Disable SUPERAntiSpyware until the computer is clean
  • Right-click on the shortcut from the system tray
  • Choose View Control Center (preferences/options)
  • On the General and Startup tab, uncheck Start SUPERAntispyware when Windows starts.
  • Click Close to exit.
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix at your DESKTOP:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

Additional links to download the tool:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Note: The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
Combofix report.
A new HijackThis log after you renamed it.

FIRST THINGS:

thanks so much for your time & assistance so far - much appreciated!!!

IDISK

Hello jazzcat,

So you don't need that 01 Hosts line now? May i remove it?
Is any program referring to it, so you can uninstall it?
If yes and you don't need it, please do so and let me know.

i'm not using idisk now, so ok to get rid of

SPYBOT:

just a heads-up - the instructions refer to Spybot 1.4 and 1.5. i had 1.6 (so i followed 1.5 instructions)

btw, the tray icon in 1.6 no longer gets grayed out as mentioned in the instructions

COMBOFIX / RECOVERY CONSOLE

- during combofix run, ANTIVIR suddenly popped up wit a detection (prior to starting combofix, ANTIVIR wasn't even in the tray?? maybe due to a verrrry slow startup for my machine). i quickly disabled ANTIVIR Guard

- did the above invalidate the COMBOFIX run?

- i noticed during the automatic COMBOFIX restart it selected the regular XP PRO startup, NOT the RECOVERY CONSOLE startup option. is this correct?

- the impact of the above was that after the autoreboot, while COMBOFIX was displaying the message to not run any apps, all my normal startup stuff ran (like MOZY, etc.). Also, ANTIVIR also started up agin during this pahse (while COMBOFIX was preparing its report)

anyway, here are the 2 logs:

Hello jazzcat,

i'm not using idisk now, so ok to get rid of

Ok.

I believe Spybot was disabled properly.

You should disable ANTIVIR before running Combofix, and all other protection programs.

Part of my instructions after Recovery Console installation:

Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix

i quickly disabled ANTIVIR Guard

Good, from now and on you should disable it before running Combofix.
I believe it didn't interfear as Combofix removed infections already.

i noticed during the automatic COMBOFIX restart it selected the regular XP PRO startup, NOT the RECOVERY CONSOLE startup option. is this correct?

Yes and Recovery Console was installed properly.

I am at work now, so i don't have time to check your reports, i will be back as soon as i check them out, with a fix.

COMBOFIX-Script
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Folder::
    C:\VundoFix Backups
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\systemprofile\Application Data\Viewpoint
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

    Registry::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\windows]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\securityproviders]
    "SecurityProviders"="msapsspc.dll, schannel.dll, digest.dll, msnsspc.dll"
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below.. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Good news - see Log below.

does this mean my machine is healthy again? ;-)

also, the only 'protection' i now have active is ANTIVIR. i don't engage in highrisk activities (P2P, downloads, etc), so is that sufficient? if not, what else do you recommend?

thks!

Hello jazzcat,

In my All clean post which i suspect is coming very soon, i am suggesting some protection programs, which will help you keep your pc clean.

Some other steps to do below.

I will need another scan so i can tell you are clean.
----------------------------------------------
Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
----------------------------------------------
I can't see any firewall in your HijackThis log, so i assume you use windows firewall.

FIREWALL
Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. It's preferable to install one of the suggested firewalls.
Vista users, must check compatibility with Vista before installation.

FREE FIREWALLS Tutorial about Firewalls can be found here
----------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Hello jazzcat,

i use a hardware router for my home network. it has a built-in firewall. is this good enough?

Yes it is, you can have Windows Firewall on too, and it's fine.

Everything is looking good now.
----------------------------------------------
Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Posted Image
The above procedure will:
  • Delete the following:
    • ComboFix and its associated files and folders.
    • VundoFix backups, if present
    • The C:\Deckard folder, if present
    • The C:_OtMoveIt folder, if present
  • Reset the clock settings.
  • Hide file extensions, if required.
  • Hide System/Hidden files, if required.
  • Reset System Restore.
----------------------------------------------
Congratulations you are clean!
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com
Note 1: If you are running Windows XP SP2, you should upgrade to SP3.
Note 2: Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 and newer versions should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.
The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing!
