I'm trying to remove a nasty infection from a computer. Based on the original symptoms, it appeared to be a smitfraud infection so I followed online advice to remove it. At this point I can boot up the computer but the virus has hijacked ie and I can only visit some sites (none that are antispyware related for the most part). I followed the steps as much as I could given the conditions for posting an hjt log. Below is a recap of what I was able to do and the log contents.

Cleaned up files as directed

Ran ad aware. No critical objects found but several privacy objects that I needed to reboot to remove. Rebooting does not remove them and they remain on the machine.

Ran superantispyware which cleaned up a bunch of stuff.

Ran spybot S&D. Couldn't get to site to update definitions so ran with old definitions. Found 1 problem and removed.

Couldn't run any online scans because couldn't get to sites.

Ran McAfee Stinger which was clean.

Downloaded Sygate firewall which is running.

Ran HJT.

Other Stuff:

At startup I get a message "Error loading c:\windows\system32\rqcllfhc.dll

On shutdown i get two errors
dwwin.exe app failed to initialize because the station is shutting down
brsvc01a.exe instruction at 0x77f51d24 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory
could not be written

Upon completing the steps below a staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Thanks for getting back to me DM.

Up front, using either Firefox or IE, I cannot get to the Kapersky site. Whatever has infected the machine is selectively blocking access to sites, definitely any site that is anti-spyware/malware related. So any online scans are out for now. Anything that's downloadable is probably doable. I'm downloading onto a memory stick on a different computer and installing on the infected one.

New HJT log and uninstall lists posted below.

Hello

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Hi, hope you had a good trip

Please print out and follow these instructions: "How to use SDFix". <- This program is for Windows 2000/XP ONLY.
When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"
  • Disconnect from the Internet and temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any real time protection programs before performing a scan.
  • When done, the SDFix report log will open in notepad and automatically be saved in the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • If SDFix is unable to run after rebooting from Safe Mode, run SDFix in either Mode, and type F, then press Enter for it to finish the final stage and produce the report.
  • Please copy and paste the contents of Report.txt in your next reply.
  • Be sure to renable you anti-virus and and other security programs before connecting to the Internet.
-- If the computer has been infected with the VirusAlert! malware warning from the clock and the Start Menu icons or drives are not visible, open the SDFix folder, right-click on either the XP_VirusAlert_Repair.inf or W2K VirusAlert_Repair.inf (depending on your version of Windows) and select Install from the Context menu. Then reboot to apply the changes.

And a new HJT log please.

Thanks,

DM

Hi DM. I did a quick check before I left the house this morning. I was able to get to lavasoft and bitdefender with firefox, two sites I previously hadn't been able to connect to. Machine is still really slow but things have improved.

Hi, thats a bit of good news, but there are still other infections present, hopefully when those are clean, your computer will be running fine

Download gmer.zip and save to your desktop.
alternate download site 1
alternate download site 2
  • Unzip/extract the file to its own folder. (Click here for information on how to do this if not sure. Win 2000 users click here.
  • When you have done this, disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
There is a small chance this application may crash your computer so save any work you have open.
  • Double-click on Gmer.exe to start the program.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Click on "Settings", then check the first five settings:
    *System Protection and Tracing
    *Processes
*Save created processes to the log
    *Drivers
*Save loaded drivers to the log
  • You will be prompted to restart your computer. Please do so.
Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Run gmer.exe
Click the tab called Processes and click the Safe... button. The computer will reboot and the Gmer screen will open.
Click Files... and browse to the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\TDSSserv.sys

Now click Delete

Now click the Services tab. Click the entries in red one by one with your right mouse button and click Delete... Answer Yes to all the warning windows.
When you've removed all the Service entries in red, reboot your computer.

Please post back with a new GMER log

Okay, I followed your instructions and got through them, though things didn't go smoothly. Here's a recap along with a new log.

Restarted in GMER safe mode and got a message that system was restarting in GMER safe mode.
Got a ton of Bad Image messages which I clicked ok for. All associated with DLL's not valid Windows Image.
GMER didn't reopen so I reopened it myself
No files at all were listed
Deleted one red-highlighted service
Rebooted in safe again to see if things went smoother
At bootup went through a checking file system routine
Indicated volume is dirty and did CHKDSK verify
REceived Made corrections to file system message.
Got more bad image messages and GMER didn't restart so restarted myself.
This time files were listed and the one you directed me to delete was not on the system
Also no red highlighted services.

Rebooted and new GMER log is below.
