It started with the home Page Change problem, I got rid of that with a restore point change. Now I get the not responding--end program, slow death wait that makes all funtions intolerable. McAfee seems to download way too often, and then shuts off its own virus scan when it does. Downloading from an uknown source is another problem, just plain maddening. HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLP

Hello aafa  Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. I apologize for your wait. If you have since resolved your problem I would appreciate you letting us know.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we will ask you to while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Please include both logs from RSIT along with the log from Kaspersky in your next reply

Thanks,

Before You perform the following I want to make you aware of this information concerning McAfee and conflicts with other security software. This could be your problem with the McAfee constantly do weird things. I will leave it to you to make up your mind which way you want to go but I see some elements of AVG8 on your machine. I don't know if you had this before and uninstalled it or not but I want to make you aware that running two anti-virus programs at the same time can cause problems with your computer since their real-time protection can interfere with each other. If you decide you do not want to keep McAfee the AVG 8 is a good product and I can give you a link to another free one if you want it. Here's the link to what I am talking about concerning McAfee and associated problems with other programs:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...mcafee&st=0

Keep in mind that if you stay with McAfee to keep it disable long enough to perform the things listed below, but of course I would strongly advise against any web surfing without your anti-virus updated and running. That's asking for trouble.

Now let's do the following:

1.)

Updating Java and Clearing Cache
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Java Icon (coffee cup) in the Control Panel.
  • It will say "Java Plug-in" under the icon.
Please find the update button or tab in the Java Control Panel. Update your Java then reboot.
  • If you are unable to update you can manually update by going here:
  • After the reboot, go back into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon.
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Delete Files button.
  • There are three options in the window to clear the cache - Leave ALL 3 CheckedDownloaded Applets
    Downloaded Applications
    Other Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

2.)

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

3.)

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

When completed please post the log from MBAM along with a HJT log. Also let me know what your decision is concerning the McAfee and how your computer is running now.
If I have helped you then please consider donating so I can continue the fight against malware Posted Image

First off, thanks for the help, it is gladly appreciated.

No.1
I would like to change from McAfee to AVG if you think it is better. What do you use on your computer ? It doesn't have to be free, just reliable and compatible. I use Consumers Reports, with good results, for alot of things that I buy. They can't test everything, but do a good job. They fail to even mention AVG and I'm sure other good products. Is it alright to use the Windows Firewall with other Anti-virus, or should I use that particular products own firewall ?

No.2
How is the Computer running now? about the same with the @#%&* exception that now everytime I go to my Browser I get a Security warning dialog box stating: current web page is trying to open a site in your trusted site list, C:\WINDOWS\system32\xpsp3res.dll After multiple+++ clicks on Yes to allow, it finaly goes away, same for clicking no to not allow. ARRRRG!!! WTF?

Here are the MBAM and HJT Logs,

Let's try this and see if it solves your issue with the trusted site warning:

Go to Internet settings/security/trusted sites/custom level/ websites in less privileged content zone etc.... Change that to disable or enable.

.................................................

I find AVG to be a good program, I use it myself coupled with a lot of other security measures which I will make you aware of when we are finishing up. Although Window's firewall works well it's big drawback is that it only provides one-way protection. I will also give you some links for free firewalls. Of course if you choose to upgrade them that would be a good idea. IF you go with another firewall be sure to disable the Window's internal firewall when you do.

For a free anti-virus please follow these instructions:

Click on this link: AVG
  • Underneath AVG Anti-Virus Free click on Download
  • Click on AVG 7.5 Free for Windows
  • Click on Download
  • A window will open. Click on Save File-A window will open. Click on Next
  • Click on Accept
  • Make sure standard install is checked and click Next
  • You can enter your name and click Next
  • click Finish After install is complete click OK
  • Follow prompters to update and check for viruses
Some more links to free anti-virus programs(Note. Choose only one)

Avira

Avast

Click on this link:Sygate
  • Choose a site to download from where it says Free Downloads From:(I used the first one)
  • A window will open asking if you want to Run or Save. Click Save
  • A window will open, click once on Desktop, then Click Save(if you wish to rename the file do so, but remember what it is for future reference).
  • You will be asked if you wish to run the file.Click Yes.
  • Close all windows which are open. Click Next
  • Check I Accept on the license agreement. Then click Next. Click Next again to complete.
  • Click Finish and click Yes to restart.
When you have time examine the program by alternately left clicking or right clicking the icon in the toolbar. This is a very versatile program. Keep it up to date also.

Here is another free one:(Note. Use only one firewall)

Comodo

Again when you have completed this post a new RSIT log and tell me things have improved.
If I have helped you then please consider donating so I can continue the fight against malware Posted Image
All donations go directly to the helper

Due to the large amount of backlogs we have I cannot respond to PMs for help unless I am already working with you

Trusted site warning NFG, still there. Before we tried anything I noticed this morning it now comes back 3 times after clicking on way too many &^@#&#*%^&^%@###+%^ times. I rebooted to no avail, this is how this whole mess started, only something was trying to change the home page instead. I got rid of it by doing a system restore.
I usually use Castle Cops for computer probs. but came over to bleeping because CC were too busy to help me. They always had me go to Safe Mode and eliminate things from an HJT Log, how come not this time ???

Trusted site warning NFG, still there. Before we tried anything I noticed this morning it now comes back 3 times after clicking on way too many &^@#&#*%^&^%@###+%^ times. I rebooted to no avail, this is how this whole mess started, only something was trying to change the home page instead. I got rid of it by doing a system restore.
I usually use Castle Cops for computer probs. but came over to bleeping because CC were too busy to help me. They always had me go to Safe Mode and eliminate things from an HJT Log, how come not this time ???

Although we will take care of some things in the HJT log we haven't reached that point yet. There are some other things I would like to clear up first and that is the possibility of conflicts with the security programs installed on your machine.

Did you unistall all of your McAfee and any possible leftovers from the original install of AVG8?

Did not uninstall mcafee yet, and cannot find remnants of avg8. You said you had noticed some elements of avg8, where ? I searced in Documents and files and folders, nothing. I would like to get rid of the annoying site warning box that came up after the JAVA ATF and MBAM 'fix' remember, it was ok before that. And yes, I had disabled McCrappy anti-virus when I did those above. Do you want me to change it over to AVG8 first and eliminate McBleepy???
Alls I can say Is BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!!!!!!

I understand your frustration, that is the kind of stuff that brought me here to begin with.

I mainly wanted you to make sure there were no more parts of AVG on the computer before trying a new download. Although HJT is showing what's leftover with no file it is best to always check first. The reason I wanted you to go ahead with the uninstalling of McAfee was twofold. First to eliminate any possibilities of conflict and then I need to look at the services in the HJT log to make sure they are all gone. Sometimes even after an uninstall there will be things which need cleaning up.

Once this is accomplished then we will know that there is no conflict and can proceed to try and solve the other problems. The next thing will probably be using HJT however that has to be run by my coach first.

OK, I am going to get rid of McAfee, and go with the AVG8. I will send another HJT Log after I am done.

I have removed McAfee and installed the Free AVG8. I will be upgrading to the AVG8 Security Center, but I would like to get rid of the annoying Trusted Site warning first if we can. Here is a new HJT Log.

Good to hear about the warning. Now that McAfee is gone let's run HJT.

Run HijackThis.
