Windows Security Alert, Iedfender, And Anti-virus Software Question.

I found the site after getting the worst virus ever. It seems that I have removed almost all of the damage it did to my computer, by following the directions in this post, from a person who has the exact same problem as me: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/161834/window-security-alert-keeps-popping-up-saying-i-my-computer-is-infected/

I did everything in that post, twice, as well as running SmiFraudFix

I then did every thing on the prep page (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic34773.html) to the last detail. The Stinger found many viruses that it would not remove, only list, and I do not knw why my fully updated Symantec cannot find them. I have spent over 12 hours on this, and I am at my wit's end... considering a format & reinstall, but I do not have my original Windows disk...

I am still getting the pop-up security alerts, and my virus program keeps catching IEDefender.

Should I post a ComboFix or HiJackThis log? My d/l rate and computer speed has slowed significantly since installing all all this third party software.

Please help! Thunder seems to have this down.

Please run this tool first

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Reagardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

You should not be following specific instructions provided to someone else especially if they were given in the HijackThis forum. Those instructions were given under the guidance of a trained staff expert to help fix that particular member's problems, NOT YOURS. Before taking any action, the helper must investigate the nature of the malware issues and then formulate a fix for the victim. Although your problem may be similar, the solution could be different based on the kind of hardware, software, system requirements, etc. and the presence of other malware. Using someone else's fix instructions could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system. It's best that you tell us what specific issues YOU are having rather than point to someone else.

Because you followed those directions, you have used Combofix. Please note the message text in blue at the top of this forum.

You should not be using Combofix unless instructed to do so by a Malware Removal Expert. It is a powerful tool intended by its creator to be "used under the guidance and supervision of an expert", NOT for private use. Using this tool incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. Please read Combofix's Disclaimer.

Further, ComboFix logs should not to be posted outside the HijackThis forums and then only when requested by a HJT Team member.

Please read the pinned topic titled "Preparation Guide For Use Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". In Step 9 there are instructions for downloading the HijackThis Installer and creating a log. This is an automatic setup version which will install the program in the proper location.

When you have done that, post your log in the HijackThis Logs and Malware Removal forum, NOT here, for assistance by the HJT Team Experts. Let them know that you ran ComboFix as they will want to see the log.

A member of the Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer. If you post your log back in this thread, the response from the HJT Team will be delayed because your post will have to be moved. This means it will fall in line behind any others posted that same day.

Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. An expert will analyze your log and reply with instructions advising you what to fix. After doing this, we would appreciate if you post a link to your log back here so we know that your getting help from the HJT Team.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are very busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT "bump" your post or make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

If after 5 days you still have received no response, then post a link to your HJT log in the thread titled "Haven't Had A Reply In Five Days?".

OK. I installed Avira, the 7th or 8th program I tried, and that seemed to have cleared up a lot, and is not bogging down my system at all.
(I am now running in my system tray Avira [Free] & PC Tools Spyware Doctor; is that an ideal combo?) Thank you again for your expertise & prompt response!

Ok. I thought you said you completed all the steps Thunder had instructed the member he was helping to do. That would have included MBAM and that's why I was referring you to post a hijackthis log.

Is this a second scan with MBAM or did you skip that step and just now followed boopme's instructions?

There are no shortcuts or guarantees when it comes to malware removal. Sometimes it takes several efforts with different or the same tools to do the job. Even then, some infections can be difficult to remove because of their morphing characteristics which allows the malware to regenerate itself.

Rescan again with MBAM (Quick Scan) in normal mode and check all items found for removal. Don't forgot to reboot afterwards. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. When done, click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the new report in your next reply.

I think MBAM, after several runs, Ad-Aware, after several runs, and Avira knocked it all out. (As well as all the progs I ran from the Prepare Before You Post instructions.) It is working fine now, just takes 3.5 instead of 2.25 minutes to restart.

What programs should I always be running in the systray/background? Currently, I am running Spyware Doctor & Avira, and I have MBAM scheduled to run & download updates and intelliscans daily, and full system scans once a week.

Is there a a more ideal set of programs to run?

If there are no more problems or signs of infection, you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "Ok"
  • Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
Choosing a security protection toolkit is a matter of personal preference, features offered, the amount of resources utilized, how it may affect system performance and what will work best for your system. A particular combination that works well for one person may not work as well for another. You may need to experiment and find the ones most suitable for your use.

The three programs you have running are all good, although I have heard that Spyware Doctor has become resource heavy. However, you probably have other programs and services set to run at startup and some of them may not be needed.

Read Slow Computer/Browser? Check here first; it may not be malware. There are reasons for slowness besides malware - i.e. disk fragmentation, disk errors, corrupt system files, too many startup programs, unnecessary services running, not enough RAM, dirty hardware components, etc. As your system gets older it becomes filled with more files/programs and has a natural tendency to slow down so cleaning and regular maintenance is essential.
