Hi,

Never posted on the forum before and have limited computer knowledge but a friend recommended using this site.

Have managed to get a virus from a P2P site I used this morning. Downloaded a file, and it would seem I inadvertently infected my PC with the smitfraud virus. Had the virus alert message next to the clock, and I was bombarded with pop ups telling me to buy anti virus software. Additionally, most items disappeared from my Start Menu.

Downloaded smitfraudfix from a website, and it seems to have got most of my PC back up and running, but now I cannot log in to websites such as hotmail, facebook (basically anything with a password)

Followed your advice online and have run ad aware, spybot, housecall, bit defender (panda wouldn't work), McAfee Stinger and now Hijackthis

See below for the report I recieved. Hope you can help!

Hello Enderby and welcome at BleepingComputer,

Sorry to have kept you waiting for so long, but the forums are really busy.
If you still need help :

1. * Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Under Browsing History, click Delete.
  • Click Delete Files, Delete cookies and Delete history
  • Click Close below.
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu..
  • Click the Clear now button below.. A new window will popup what to clear.
  • Select all and click the Clear button again.
  • Click OK to close the Options window
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
2. Download RSIT by random/random and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • If it cannot locate TrendMicro's HijackThis, the tool will be downloaded, so please allow the download and accept the installation.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
Greetings,
Thunder

Hello Enderby,

Definitely not clean yet.

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first (not for Windows Vista users !).
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode, in case your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware. This allows us to help you. (WinXP SP3 users, please download the appropriate SP2 file, Home or Pro, to install the RC)

In the event you already have Combofix, and you're notified a more current version is available, please download the latest version as described in the tutorial.
It must be saved directly to your desktop.

Note: Make sure not to click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze.

Please post the log from ComboFix (can also be found as C:\ComboFix.txt) in your next reply. :)

If you have any questions along the way, STOP and ask them before proceeding !!

Greetings,
Thunder

Hi

Sorry for delay replying, been away.

Tried 3 times on Weds, and 3 times tonight. It starts working through the stages then freezes. I have left it for 4 hours tonight and it was stuck on Stage 30. Therefore can't get the log to post up. Any suggestions?

I will try again now and leave overnight for 8 hours and see if that works.

Regards

Enderby

Hello Enderby,

Did you get a message, running ComboFix, to download a newer version ?
If not, please remove your current version from your desktop, and download the latest one,
then run this one.

Hi Thunder,

Yes I did. However I think it just updated it. I will remove it completely and start again and let you know how it gets on.

Hi Thunder,

Its no good. Ran it for 26 hours (!) and it just froze. It got to the point where it said it was composing a log, but was on that for 7 hrs! I have tried to run it again, currently at Stage 46 after 12 hours.

Any suggestions? I am going away early tomorrow for 4 days, willing to leave it on if you think it will work!

Hello Enderby,

No use leaving it running any longer than 15 minutes.

Can you check if by chance you find a log called ComboFix.txt in either the root of the C: drive or in C:\Qoobox ?
If so, please post the contents in your next reply.

Greetings,
Thunder

Hello Enderby,

That log looks quite good.

Open Notepad and copy and paste the bold, blue text below in it:@ECHO OFF
IF EXIST log.txt DEL log.txt
ECHO Deleting files>>log.txt
FOR %%g in (
C:\WINDOWS\tqwolser.exe) DO (
IF EXIST %%g (
ATTRIB -r -s -h %%g
DEL %%g
IF EXIST %%g (
ECHO %%g not deleted>>log.txt
) ELSE (
ECHO %%g deleted>>log.txt)
) ELSE (
ECHO %%g not found>>log.txt))
START NOTEPAD.EXE log.txt

Save this as del.bat Choose to save as "all files" and place it on your Desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and post the content of the log file that opens in your next reply.

What problems are remaining at this time ?

Greetings,
Thunder

Hi Thunder

The main problem (that I can identify) is the inability to log in to programme such as Hotmail, Yahoo, Facebook etc. Whenever I put in my username and password, it says they are incorrect, even though I can log in to them fine through my work laptop. Any suggestions?

Hello Enderby,

If you have no problems logging in, using another PC, and
you're sure CapsLock and NumLock settings on your keyboard are OK,
then I'm thinking maybe one of your security programs is creating the problem.
Can you temporarily disable your McAfee firewall, and try again ?

Besides those login issues, no other problems anymore ?

Greetings,
Thunder

Thunder,

No, definitely not cap / num lock. Have turned McAfee off as well which hasn't resolved it. My friends have tried accessing their accts via the PC as well and they can't get on them. The login issue is the only one that remains, and has only been an issue since I first got the spyware problem

Hello Enderby,

I suppose this was done from within your account ?

Is there an another account with admin rights available on your system ?
If so, did you check from this account as well ?
Just to determine if it's a problem related to your account or to the PC settings.

Thunder
