I'm getting a warning image on my desktop which reads,

Warning!
Spyware detected on your computer

Install an antivirus or spyware remover to
clean your computer."

Also when I look at the desktop properties there is no tab for either desktop or screen saver

If I leave the computer idle for a while without touching it, it starts to warn me that windowns has detected a problem and is restarting, and although it looks like this is what is happening I'm not sure it is because if I click the mouse the desktop comes up again, so is probably a screen saver made to look like it's restarting.

Could you please advise me how to remove this.

Thanks!

If you use Firefox browser, do this also:

Alternate download location
Alternate download location

Double-click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a check mark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See note below)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM. Please post that log in your next reply.
Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Then, please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • In the drop down box labeled Files of type change the type to Text file.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
In your next response, please be sure to include the logs from MBAM and Kaspersky along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi drex23

Thanks for replying so quickly.

I have done what you said and the message on my desktop has now gone and I can now see the desktop & screen saver tabs in Display Properties.

I have posted the 3 logs below which show there are some other problems I think.

Hi again,

Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    F:\SmitfraudFix.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\a.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Desktop\SmitfraudFix.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0\28\506992dc-1da1d655
    C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\Desktop\SmitfraudFix
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the light yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Your Java cache is infected. To clear the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) cache, do this:
  • Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Java icon.
    -The Java Control Panel appears.
  • Click "Settings" under Temporary Internet Files.
-The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
  • Click "Delete Files".
-The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
-There are three options on this window to clear the cache.
    • Delete Files
    • View Applications
    • View Applets
  • Click "OK" on Delete Temporary Files window.
-Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.
  • Click "OK" on Temporary Files Settings window.
  • Close the Java Control Panel.
You can also view these instructions along with screenshots here.

Your Java is also out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
After completing that, post the log from OTMoveIt in your next response along with a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know what problems you are still having, if any.

Hi Davighi, I'd like to run a rootkit scan because one of the entries in the MBAM removals makes me think it's possible one might be there. So, let's just rule that out.

Please download F-Secure Blacklight (fsbl.exe) and save to your C:\ drive.
  • Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
  • Copy/paste or type the following in the command window: C:\fsbl.exe /expert
  • Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
  • Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
  • Click "Scan".
  • After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit".
  • BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
  • The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet!
I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe" and "tcptest.exe.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.
Note: If Blacklight does not work, rename fsbl.exe to zsbl.exe and try running it again.

Great, that came back clean.

One thing I would mention is that I don't see a software firewall installed. I would suggest that you get one, especially if you are not behind a router. This prevention page has lots of information and tips on how to prevent this in the future along with some recommendations for firewalls.
If you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Also, it's a good idea to make sure your programs are up-to-date because older versions may contain security leaks. To find out which programs need to be updated, you can run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Personally, I use Comodo's firewall. However, some people find that it gives too many pop-up alerts, especially with its Defense+ system activated. If you try that one, you might consider disabling that feature. I've also used Kerio (which is actually called Sunbelt Personal Firewall now), which can be had in free or paid form. The only qualm I had with that was the advertisement blocking present in the paid/trial version was too aggressive for me. But, that can be turned off and a lot of people seem happy with that one.

When Windows Vista first came out, I used PC Tools' firewall as it was one of the only ones compatible with it then. I don't remember having any real problems with it and it didn't give me too many notifications, as I remember. Best bet is probably to try one and see if it fits you and plays well with your system. Usually, paid products will let you have a trial period to check it out. Some will require more configuration than others, etc. So, some of it is just personal preference and what feels right to you.

Thank you very much for the donation and let me know if you have any more questions.
