Please take note of a few guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools. Doing so could cause changes to the directions I have to give you and prolong the time required. Further more, you should not be taking any advice relating to this computer from any other source throughout the course of this fix.

Unfortunatly One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.
I'll assume that you want to continue to disinfect this comptuer, please follow the instructions below.

Your logs show that you have one or more "rogue program(s)" on your machine. In this case Antivirus Xp 2008. You may have downloaded this program yourself or been tricked into downloading it, or even paid for it. It may also have been installed without your knowledge. These programs use underhanded and misleading tactics to get you to buy their products. This is done by telling you that you have malware present on your machine when in fact you do not. Some download adware or the like and then mislead you into buying their product under the fakery of removing the very thing they have just placed there.

For some information about the program(s), you can look them up in:
  • Bleeping Computer's Uninstall Database
  • SpywareWarrior's Rogue Programs List
    We remove such programs as if they were any other type of malware. Please do not use the uninstall entry in your Add/Remove Programs to uninstall these programs unless directed, as some uninstallers are fake.

    Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.
Download and Run SDfix
Please download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop.
When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with "Administrative rights"
  • Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
  • (this is the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix).
  • DO NOT use it just yet.
Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Open the SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next replyalong with a new HijackThis log.
-- If this error message is displayed when running SDFix: "The command prompt has been disabled by your administrator. Press any key to continue..."
Please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:
%systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\swreg IMPORT %systemdrive%\SDFix\apps\Enable_Command_Prompt.reg
Press Ok and then run SDFix again.

-- If the Command Prompt window flashes on then off again on XP or Win 2000, please go to Start Menu > Run > and copy/paste the following line:

Reboot and then run SDFix again.

-- If SDFix still does not run, check the %comspec% variable. Right-click My Computer > click Properties > Advanced > Environment Variables and check that the ComSpec variable points to cmd.exe.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. (This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only)Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browserClick Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browserClick Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Thanks for the advice. I disconnected the infected PC last Wednesday night. I think the best thing for me to do now is reformat the drive. I have never had to do this before. Is it difficult? Is there any way I can save some of the files on the drive, or is that too risky? I do not have any of the original windows disks. It came preloaded from Dell, and of course they did not send any CDs with it. I of course am too stupid to back anything up, including system software and data files. Can you help me?

No, it is actually not that difficult I had to reformat and reinstall my computer before because I had some hardware failure prombems.
If you read my post above for the Backdoor Warning there is a link that says: When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall
That gives some helpful tips.

That is impossible unless your computer is made up of different parts like C drive and D drive, otherwise once yor reformat everything will be gone.
my suggustion would be get an external hard-drive and backup all documents/file and works that are very important to you and that you really need it and you don't want it to be gone as its the only copy you have. Otherwise, I would just leave it alone and just reinstall and reformat as thats the best option.
Please do NOT backup any system files as once you reinstall XP they will be replaced.

One suggustion I have is during the process of formating the drive I would recommend you seperate the drive into sections such as C: and D: drive more if you wish, keep one drive for all the Windows stuff and another drive for your pictures/files/folder etc...
By doing that next time if you need to format you can just format the drive where your Windows drive is and all your files/documents will be safe :)

Same goes for me, you can get an XP cd from a friend or buy one. Make sure you but the correct one, although it doesn't matter that much.
Go to start>Run>type in "sysdm.cpl"(without the quotes) Under the general tab look what your system is.
If its Windows Xp professional please buy the Xp pro disk if its Home edition that obviously get the Home Edition copy.

If you still need help on reformatin and reinstall please feel free to start a new topic in the Windows XP Home and Professional forum as this is forum is helping you remove malware.

Yes, I am sure I want to reformat. Or maybe I should say I don't want to, but I feel it's the best option. There are some network dudes at work that said they could do it for me, so I think I will go that route. They pretty much told me the same things you told me, but I wanted to make sure I got your opinion before proceding. You guys have helped me before, and I trust you. This topic can be closed.
