Copying A Scene From A Dvd

I have a DVD (not a copyrighted DVD) that I'd like to copy a scene from. I don't have any dvd ripping software. Do I need it? And, if so, is there any product out there that is free. Because I don't usually do this and would rather not buy software that I don't need. Thank you.
