My (10 year old) son's PC has been infected with XL Guarder and I can't get past the creepy she-voice and XLG prompt. I've googled and found some instructions on removal (not sure of the accuracy) but the info assumes you have control of your PC and it's running. Apparently this problem was first noticed while I was away and my husband told him to pull the plug from the PC and wait for my return... Now when I try to boot the PC I can't get past the prompt to let the machine finish the boot.

My McAfee had expired (bad PC owner, I know) and now that I have a new license I can't even get the software to load (and attempt removal)...

So,
1- How do you get past the XLG prompt to regain control of your PC
2- Is it likely that the latest updates to viruscan and the like in McAfee Internet Security Suite would remove and kill this junk and any other lurkers
3- What is the best way to tell which removal tool is trustworthy and won't conflict with other software (ie McAfee)

Thanks a bunch!

(BTW, very happy I found this forum... I know enough to be dangerous, but I'm smart enough to understand when to ask questions and how to follow instructions!)
