at first, i believed this to be a problem with my xp machine not being set up for vista, but i ruled that out because the 4 other computers can all see eachother. let me explain

my home network is made up of 5 computers.

(2) vista laptops
(1) 1 vista desktop
(2) xp laptops

the xp machines can see the vista desktop and 1 vista laptop and vice versa.
i can log in to each and see the shared files. the vista desktop can even see the xp machines in the network map

however, one of my vista laptops cannot see anything besides the router in the network screen, but it does find the vista desktop in the network map. (it can most likely find the other vista laptop, but that belongs to my sister and im not concerned with her setup)

so, in short, 2 xp systems can communicate with 2 vista systems, but one vista system cannot see the other 4 systems in the workgroup.

on the troubled laptop, i have network discovery on, i change the network to private. the workgroup is the same as the others (WORKGROUP)

any clue what the problem might be?

Found the problem, altho the tcpi/ip settings were correct. on the vista lapton, the subnet mask in advanced options was different from the the other systems. no clue why. problem solved. Now i can use http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/
