Posted 14 August 2008 - 01:21 AM

Recently, I turned my computer on and typed my password, left the room came back in and wqas infected by Xp Antivirus 2008 - "I was so easy to figure that it was a virus". Then I used Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and got rid of it but now I have very slow shutdowns and my computer is stuck on logging off... Then I have to restart and type my password again but it take longer and I came up with my wallaper because I fixed the Desktop and Screensaver tab thing and there was no startbar and no desktop items. So i have to alway go to task manager and type explorer in new task.
PLEASE HELP. Here's my HijackThis log:

Hi again,
  • Your log(s) show that you are using so called peer-to-peer or file-sharing programs (in your case LimeWire). These programs allow to share files between users as the name(s) suggest. In today's world the cyber crime has come to an enormous dimension and any means is used to infect personal computers to make use of their stored data or machine power for further propagation of the malware files. A popular means is the use of file-sharing tools as a tremendous amount of prospective victims can be reached through it.

It is therefore possible to be infected by downloading manipulated files via peer-to-peer tools and thus suggested to be used with intense care. Some further readings on this subject, along the included links, are as follows: "File-Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer" and "Risks of File-Sharing Technology."

It is also important to note that sharing entertainment files and proprietary software infringes the copyright laws in many countries over the world and you are putting yourself at risk of being indicted through organizations watching over the rights of the authors of such files (i.e. the RIAA for music files, or the MPAA for movie files in the USA) or the authors of the files themselves.

Naturally there are also legal ways to use these services, such as downloading Linux distributions or office suites such as "Open Office."

    Removal Instructions

  • Empty all p2p (such as LimeWire) download folders. They might contain infected files. Please avoid using these p2p applications until the system is clean. Set up Limewire in order not to start with windows.

  • This step is needed if you should still run explorer via Task Manager. Otherwise you skip it.
Open a notepad (Start > Run and type in Notepad ) make sure the wordwrap under Format menu is not selected.
Copy and paste the text in code box into it.

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
    "Shell"="Explorer.exe"
    • Save the file to the desktop as regfix.reg
    • Make sure the Save as typefield says All files.
    • Locate regfix.reg on the Desktop and double-click on it and confirm.
    • A window pops up asking if you are sure to add the file to the registry. Click Yes.
    • You get another window popup saying that regfix.reg successfully added to the registry.
Note: You have to turn off any registry protector software you have in order the changes to be taken place.

  • You are missing one important program on that computer: An antivirus.
This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can. Besides the paid antivirus programs there are also some free antivirus programs::Install and update. Run a full/complete scan, let removed/quarantined what it finds and copy and paste the report to your reply.

  • Download Deckard's Association File Tool daft.exe and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on it and click Run.
    • Click on the Scan button.
    • If it finds faulty file associations, they will appear in red beside a checkbox
    • Click Save Log and save daft.txt
    • Copy and paste the content of daft.txt to your reply.
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
  • Please tell me about your problem with the explorer and any other problem(s) you observe.
In your next reply:
  • The Antivirus log.
  • Both RSIT logs.
  • Tell me about the current problems.

And I accidently forgot to save the DAF log. >.< But I remember the .reg and .scr extention thing come up.
+ I tried to download the anti-virus programs you suggested even though I had some, but they took too long.
And log.txt was maximized. but info.txt was not minimised. I could not find it.

Please disable Windows automatic update to prevent unexpected result at this stage and gain some speed:
Go to start > control panel > automatic update > select Turn off automatic update and confirm.

I do have anti-virus! Its Spyware Doctor and MBAM!

None of these programs is an Antivirus. They are Antispyware/antimalware programs. You need an antivirus to protect you against viruses.

I tried to download the anti-virus programs you suggested even though I had some, but they took too long.

You need just one of them. More than one Antivirus is not recommended.

And log.txt was maximized. but info.txt was not minimised. I could not find it.

The info.txt is in this folder: C:\rsit

In your next reply:

1. The content of antivirus log.
2. The content of info.txt

Yes indeed, I needed the confirmation to make sure it is not just the Spyware Doctor antispyware.

Thanks for the logs.
  • I have taken a quick look at the logs as I am tied up now with my work. Please tell me if you have used or using a flash driver or thumb driver on the computer. If yes it is infected. Don't use it right now on any computer.

  • One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

A backdoor Trojan can allow an attacker to
gain control of the system, log keystrokes, steal passwords, access personal
data, send malevolent outgoing traffic, and close the security warning
messages displayed by some anti-virus and security programs.

I would advise you to disconnect this PC from the Internet, and then go to
a known clean computer and change any passwords or security information held
on the infected computer. In particular, check whatever relates to online
banking financial transactions, shopping, credit cards, or sensitive
personal information. It is also wise to contact your financial institutions
to apprise them of your situation.

We will do our best to clean the computer of any infections seen on the log.
However, because of the nature of this Trojan, I cannot offer a total
guarantee that there are no remnants left in the system, or that the
    computer will be trustworthy.

Many security experts believe that once infected with this type of Trojan,
the best course of action is to reformat and reinstall the Operating System.
Making this decision is based on what the computer is used for, and what
information can be accessed from it.

Knowing the above, let us know if you wish to proceed.

I am confused... What should I do now? I have got a USB but I removed the exe32.exe threat from my computer and the USB already. I used USBScan and Dr. Web CuretIt to remove it.
One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.
Are you sure? Like did anything on the logs have something related to a Backdoor? Because I have removed a few Backdoors on my old computer eg. Backdoor.PoisonIvy I think..

To give you an idea this is one of them:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{926a9e4c-e3da-11da-8d01-00167624724d}]
shell\Auto\command - Cn911.exe
shell\AutoRun\command - C:\WINDOWS\system32\RunDLL32.EXE Shell32.DLL,ShellExec_RunDLL Cn911.exe

You man then read these:

http://fileinfo.prevx.com
http://www.greatis.com
http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_142206.htm

You should bear in mind that running a few tools might not give the assurance that you are clean. Those tools have limitations and depend on detecting known infections. We can help you to clean more infections as far as it is possible. But it doesn't mean you have the guarantee that you are 100% clean. It means any sensitive information on that PC is not safe any more. Besides there might be always some irreparable damage. The best way to be sure to backup those files and data you want to keep and make a clean reinstall of Windows. A clean reinstall removes the infection completely and fixes all the corrupted system files and broken registry items.

Let me know your decision please.

As I told before: "We can help you to clean more infections as far as it is possible." and : "Let me know your decision please."

Before we proceed I would like you to read the instruction carefully and not to make any changes (updating windows, installing new software, removing anything, adding anything, etc.) as it might prolong the cleaning process. Please tell me if you agree to this then we can proceed with the cleaning.

Note 1: Two of the tools we are going to use run Catchme (a rootkit scanner) as a part of their routine. Spyware Doctor used to flag Catchme as Application NirCmd. Please don't remove this application at least as log as we are not done with the fixes. If Spyware Doctor Quarantined restore it again (open Spyware Doctor > settings > Quarantine > select Application. NirCMD and press restore).

Note 2: Please have your flash drive/ Thumb drive/ memory stick or any other external storage device ready to be disinfected as they might be infected if they are used on this computer. Please note that if one of this devices remains infected it infects the rest again and what we are doing is in wain. The best thing is to assume they are infected and run the tool we are going to use on them. Don't not connect them yet.

Note 3: Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Some of our fixes will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.
  • I see still eMule start up entries. Having any p2p application on the system at this stage might lead to reinfection or infecting other users. I see also traces of BitTorrent and Azurus. They are not listed on your Program list so they already might be uninstalled. If not go to start > All Programs > click those applications > click the uninstaller of the application.

Then please remove the following folders anyway:

    C:\Program Files\eMule
    C:\Program Files\BitTorrent
    C:\Program Files\Azureus

  • Please open HiJackThis and choose do a system scan only. Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below (if present):

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)

Optional: The following item is related to IMVU 3D messenger has been known to cause problems and, unless it is something you really want to keep. The file might not even exist any more on your hard drive. More information about the program: http://www.castlecops.com

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, including browsers, so that nothing other than HijackThis is open, then click Fix Checked. A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES. Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

    • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
    • Reboot your computer when done.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.

  • We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully.

You have to install the Recovery Console before running the tool because Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Instruction to install Recovery Console :

    Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

    Posted Image

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

    • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.
    • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.
    • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

In your next reply:
  • The log of SDfix.
