I have an Alienware running Windows XP Professional.

When I start up my computer, I goes to the "choose your account", login screen, like normal. But when I login, all I get is a desktop with the background pic on it, but no icons, and just a little blank window in the top-left corner that says "personalized settings". That is all that shows up. I still can use my mouse, but I cannot click on the "start" button, or even bring it up using the windows key (but I am not even sure it is there, because I have the dock on auto-hide). also, the hard drive light doesn't flash at all, so the hard drive isn't running.
What do I do?

I have the Alienware re-boot disk that returns it to as it was fresh out of the box. Could I use this, or is my computer fried?

If you have a hardware (hard drive) problem, then your restore boot disk may not work.

Have you tried using System Restore from a command prompt in Safe Mode to return to a previous state before your problems began?

Try System Restore from a command prompt in Safe Mode as the first step. That's the easiest thing to do.

Also if you have other accounts set up, try logging on from a different account. Right now its difficult to tell if this is viral or hardware related, so you need to try some simple things first.

He's asking you to do it in Safe Mode.

To get too safe mode:

Turn on the computer. Shortly after the Alienware screen start tapping F8.
You should be prompted with a list of options. Choose safe mode and try it there.
If I am helping you and I do not respond within 24 hours, please send me a PM. :)
