Welcome to the BleepingComputer Forums. Since it has been a few days, please post a new HijackThis log. Please see Preparation Guide for use before posting about your potential Malware problem. Thank you for your patience.

If you have already posted this log at another forum or if you decide to seek help at another forum, please let us know. There is a shortage of helpers and taking the time of two volunteer helpers means that someone else may not be helped.

I see that you have P2P/file sharing program(s) installed on your computer. P2p applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. I recommend that you remove Orbitdownloader. As long as you have the P2P program installed, the risk for reinfection is high so it may be difficult to get your computer clean. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.
The list below illustrates many reasons why P2P programs are dangerous and why members of the security community advise against their use.
  • P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer.
  • P2P security measures are easily circumvented.
  • Some P2P programs will share everything on the computer with anyone by default. If your P2P program is not configured correctly, you may be sharing more files than you realize. Even the safest P2P file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the P2P file sharing process. By default, most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other P2P users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. The reason for this is simple, file sharing relies on its members giving and gaining unfettered access to computers across the P2P network. However, this practice can make you vulnerable to data and identity theft. Even if you change those risky default settings to a safer configuration, the act of downloading files from an anonymous source greatly increases your exposure to infection. That is because the files you are downloading may actually contain a disguised threat. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across P2P files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.
  • There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to the file sharing network by a badly configured program.
  • P2P programs have always been a target of malware writers and increasingly so of late with Viruses, Worms and Trojans being distributed with the downloaded files.
  • P2P programs connected to a network can be used to spread malware, share private documents, or use the file server to both store and forward malware.
  • Many of the files in P2P networks are copyrighted and legal action could result.
  • Pedophiles can use P2P communities to distribute child porn materials or attempt to make contact with children.

The entry below indicates that you have Freeze.com screensaver on your computer.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [trioService] "C:\PROGRA~1\Freeze.com\Living 3D Dolphins\trioService.exe "
I recommend that you remove freeze.com screensavers or anything pertaining to Freeze.com by using Add or Remove Programs. Click Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.
Read what users say about freeze.com on Safeweb.Norton.

Screensavers,
Spyware,
Spam,
Adware,

This website, which has, at times, send out hundreds of e-mails upon sign up has started joining in to the Free Screensavers franchise with Adware, is aimed at people who don't like Windows official Screensavers and people who want Screensavers and Wallpapers on the newest Games or Movies to show off to their friends.

This website used to send out at least 200 e-mails which were quite spammy a week. Since then, they have toned down the volume of their e-mail, however, it is still very spammy. However, now Freeze.com has started distributing Adware and Spyware with it's Screensavers.

This websites ads are very persuasive and tell you that you could get a cute/good screensaver for free and have it with no Adware, Spyware or Virus'. When the user clicks the ad, it immediately downloads virus' to your computer, destroying it quite quickly.
Freeze.com advertisments are only found on sites which have such advertising links as CasaleMania or DoubleClick as it is not an honest advertiser.

The other bad thing about Freeze.com is the fact that it exploits your browser on the click of one of their pop-ups, immediately downloading a virus to your computer. This is very dangerous because unsuspecting users have no time to react, they just instantly get a few, very hard to remove virus'.

This site is not at all recommended to visit because of it's spyware, adware and virus'. It is very unsafe and can severely damage your computer in a very short space of time. This website is best avoided, with all of it's malicious ads blocked.

Danger Rating - 100% - All the danger you could imagine. A Screensaver scammer, Email-Spammer, Pop-Up Booter, Bad Scam Shopper and Computer Exploiter.

Read what this user says:

Freeze.com and spyware into Google will quickly tell you the site is a known purveyor of adware. Similarly, always scrutinize a site's privacy policy before downloading (and if you can't find one, steer clear); the second paragraph of Freeze.com's privacy policy clearly states you'll be subjected to some form of advertising in exchange for the "free" programs. Finally, even if you already practice conscientious and safe downloading, make sure to educate children and less-savvy users on the finer points of avoiding spyware.

It is interfering with emails.

Thanks for the help so far. My laptop has been very slow that it's difficult to even turn on and wait for everything to load - which never happened before. Hopefully we can get all of this fixed!

The warning regarding P2P programs in my previous post applies to Limeware as well as Orbitdownloader. Until we get your computer clean, please uninstall all P2P programs and do not add any P2P programs. Using P2P programs may allow malware onto your computer faster than we can remove it. Thanks.

You may want to print this page. Make sure to work through the fixes in the order it is mentioned below. If there is anything that you do not understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

Step 1

A Firewall is an essential part of computer security and you do not appear to have a third party software firewall running on your system. If you have one, and I missed it, please ignore this. If you are relying on the firewall that comes with Service Pack 2, then you need to install a third party software firewall. While the SP2 firewall is better than nothing, it does not monitor outgoing traffic, so anything malicious on your computer can 'phone home' at will. There are several firewalls that provide better protection than the Windows SP2 firewall. Follow these steps to turn off/disable the Windows Firewall before installing a new firewall:
  • Download the new firewall to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet.
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Switch to Classic View if you have not already done so.
  • Double click on the Windows Firewall icon.
  • Click Off (Not recommended).
  • Install the new Firewall.
Do not attempt to run two software firewalls since like running two antivirus programs, they will possibly cause problems and conflict with each other.

There are a few firewalls available for free that appear to be good and easy to use:For more information about firewalls, and why a two-way firewall is better than the Windows XP one-way firewall, please read Understanding and Using Firewalls.

Step 2

In normal mode, run an online antivirus check from at least two and preferably three of the following sites
BitDefender
Computer Associates Online Virus Scan
Panda's ActiveScan
Trend Micro Housecall
Windows Live Safety Center Free Online Scan
This scanner from Trend does not require an Active X to run.
  • Detects and removes malware ( viruses, worms, trojans, etc. )
  • Detects and removes grayware and spyware
  • Restores damage caused by malware to your system.
  • Notifies about vulnerabilities in installed programs and connected network services.
  • Multi-platform support for: Windows, Linux, Solaris.
  • Easy-to-use with the Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
When you have completed the scans, if you get a report of files that can’t be cleaned / deleted, make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself. Please post that list in your next reply.

Step 3

Please download Spybot-S&D.
Please check this link, Using Spybot- Search and Destroy To Remove Spyware From Your Computer, for instructions on how to download, install and use Spybot-S&D. Run this program as soon as possible.

Step 4

Please download Ad-Aware 2008.
Please check this link, Ad-Aware 2007/ 2008 for instructions on how to download, install and use Ad-Aware. Run this program as soon as possible.

Step 5

I recommend using Spyware Blaster.
Please download SpywareBlaster. SpywareBlaster helps to:
  • Prevent the installation of Active X-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted software.
  • Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
  • Restrict the actions of potentially unwanted sites in Internet Explorer.
Please see Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware, Hijackers, and Malware for instructions on how to download, install, and use SpywareBlaster.

Step 6
  • Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM). Alternate download link
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
  • Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from the Malware Bytes Web site. Scroll down the page until you see Latest Database; click Download from GT500.org
  • Double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab, make sure the Perform Quick Scan option is selected.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and Scan in progress will show at the top. It may take some time to complete; please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully.
  • At the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
  • Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.
Step 7

The ATF-Cleaner program is for XP and Windows 2000 only.
ATF-Cleaner features include:
  • Cleaning of all user temp folders, administrator only can use this feature.
  • Cleaning of the Java cache, which seems to be harboring more and more malware.
  • Cleaning the cache, cookies, history, download history, visited links and saved passwords. You have the option of checking no if you want to save your passwords.
Please download the ATF-Cleaner by Atribune.
Instructions:
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Check the boxes to the left of:
    • Windows Temp
    • Current User Temp
    • All Users Temp
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Prefetch (Windows XP) only
    • Java Cache
  • The rest are optional - if you want to remove them all, check Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • When you get the Done Cleaning message, click OK.
If you use the Firefox browser:
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • When you get the Done Cleaning message, click OK.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use the Opera browser:
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • When you get the Done Cleaning message, click OK.
  • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
If needed, Tutorial on ATF Cleaner with pictures.
Do not run it yet.

Step 8

Please disconnect from the Internet. Please close ALL browser windows (including this one).

Step 9

I repeat the following statement regarding P2P File Sharing Programs and the dangers of having P2P File Sharing Programs such as the two listed below on your computer.

Even the safest "P2P" file sharing programs that do not contain bundled spyware, still expose you to risks because of the very nature of the "P2P" file sharing process. By default, most "P2P" file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup. They are also configured to allow other "P2P" users on the same network open access to a shared directory on your computer. Many very malicious worms and trojans, such as the Storm Worm, target and spread across "P2P" files sharing networks because of their known vulnerabilities.

Uninstall the following programs.

Limewire
Orbitdownloader

To uninstall Limewire.
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Limewire, click Remove.
  • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.
  • Using Windows Explorer (Windows key+e), search for the Limewire folder. If the program folder is still there, select/highlight the Limewire folder. DELETE it. (File > Delete.) If Windows is not installed on the C drive, replace C:\ with the appropriate drive letter.
  • Follow the same steps to remove Orbitdownloader.
  • Close Windows Explorer.
Step 10
Use ctrl + alt + del (Three keys together) to get task manager. Find these processes and end task them.
OR
Use the Process Manager in HijackThis:
  • Open HijackThis.
  • Click Open the Misc Tools Section
  • Click Open Process manager, find these programs and kill process the following running processes:
    LimeWire.exe
Step 11

Now we will address the HijackThis fixes.

Please run HijackThis and click Scan. Place checks next to the following entries (make sure not to miss any):

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [DeleteGrabPro] rundll32.exe advpack.dll,DelNodeRunDLL32 "C:\Program Files\Orbitdownloader\GrabPro.dll"
O4 - Startup: LimeWire On Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis, and click Fix Checked to have HijackThis fix the entries you checked.

Step 12

The entry below indicates that you have LinkScanner installed on your computer.

O18 - Protocol: linkscanner - {F274614C-63F8-47D5-A4D1-FBDDE494F8D1} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgpp.dll

WebmasterWorld says:
LinkScanner was withdrawn because it was a security risk for AVG users.

I recommend that you remove AVG V8 and reload it without the website scanner or download AVG Free. Please see this thread regarding LinkScanner Concerns AVG Stops Real-Time Scanning".

On July 5, 2008 Peter Cameron, a managing director of AVG for Australia and New Zealand, said that the AVG free edition is already fixed, and a new commercial version will be released on July 9. He pointed to a new version of free AVG 8 (build 138, July 4) that "addressed and rectified the issue," and also said that the old version of free AVG 8 was currently getting auto-updated with the new code, but that this usually takes a few days to propagate to the users.

Step 13

Optional Fixes is the name that we use for fixes for unnecessary programs that load during startup and run in the background. These programs are not required to start automatically as you can start them manually if you need them. You would be removing the program from your startup but you would not be removing the program itself.

Your computer may be sluggish due to the many programs loading during startup and running in the background that are not necessary. Windows has a facility for starting programs at startup time. Some of these programs are required for your computer and the applications installed on it to run correctly. A good example of such a program is a virus-checking application that must always run, constantly checking for and isolating or removing files with viruses. Other such programs are not strictly required, or are optional. In some cases, you can gain significant performance enhancements by disabling the automatic startup of these programs. In many cases, the functionality offered by the programs is still available by starting the programs manually by, for example, starting the program from the Windows Start->Programs menu. Media players and instant messaging programs often fall into this category. In fact, it is common for many modern software applications, when installed, to add programs at startup that add items to the system tray or shortcut (context) menus in Windows Explorer to provide quick access to the features and functions of these applications. While they may be useful, they do increase boot time and consume system resources. It is advised that you disable these programs so that they do not take up necessary resources or slow the boot time.

Other than ScanRegistry, SystemTray, StateMgr, antivirus program entries, and firewall program entries, very few others need to load and run.

Read the articles below to see if it applies to your computer problem with being slow to respond.

Help! My computer is slow!

4 Ways to Speed Up Your Computer's Performance
It's not always malware: How to fix the top 10 Internet Explorer issues

By fixing the "Optional Fixes", you will remove the program from your startup but you will not remove the program itself. Note the large number of startup items. This adversely affects the bootup time and computer speed with this large amount of unnecessary programs loading at startup and then running in the background.

ATIPtaxx.exe is the tray bar process for your ATI graphics card drivers. It gives you easy access to your graphic card settings. It is the control panel for the ATI series of video cards allowing access to such features as display resolution, color depth, etc. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Display. Some users may need it if they have optimized their settings. This process can be removed to free up system resources. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATIPTA] C:\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe

NDSTray.exe (ConfigFreeT Tray) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. ConfigFreeT Tray on a Toshiba laptop. Tray utility for their network switching application which permits switching network devices and settings with a click on the tray icon. While it is not required, for people who span multiple networks and want an easy way to go from wired to wireless and change addresses and other network settings, it is necessary. This is a valid program but it is not required to run on startup. Whether or not you need to run this program on startup must be decided by you. If you feel that you want this program starting automatically so that you have it available as needed, then do not disable it. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NDSTray.exe] NDSTray.exe

PadExe.exe (Toshiba Touch PadTouch and Launch) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. padexe.exe is a process installed alongside TOSHIBA Laptops and provides additional configuration options for the touchpad device. Toshiba Touch and Launch offers easy movement and freedom of programs navigation with TouchPad. This is a valid program but it is not required to run on startup. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources. Many users have reported this process slows their boot time. It may be worthwhile to fix it with HijackThis. Item(s) to fix in HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PadTouch] C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\Touch and Launch\PadExe.exe

SmoothView.exe (TOSHIBA) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. TOSHIBA Zooming Utility - allows "automatic" zoom feature in some appications, like IE, MS-Office, WMPlayer, Adobe-Reader and also desktop icons.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SmoothView] "C:\Program Files\TOSHIBA\TOSHIBA Zooming Utility\SmoothView.exe"

tpsmain.exe (TOSHIBA) process can be removed to free up resources without compromising system performance. tpsmain.exe is a process associated with Toshiba laptops/desktops. It manages the power save function to make sure that the system goes to a power saver mode when not used. This program is not required to start automatically as you can start it manually if you need it. It is advised that you disable this program so that it does not take up necessary resources.
