I've run numerous spyware removal programs but virtumonde continually reappears. I've gone through all of the steps at this site, hoping someone can review the info below and help out. If this doesn't work I am going to unplug my computer and go back to postal mail, TV, landlines phones, and a wood burning stove.

The main issue is constant new Tabs with advertising appearing in IE. Even in FireFox Safe Mode, a new Tab will open every few minutes with virus checking, PC scan, and casino ads and pop-ups. At times I also can't access certain sites, but running the various spyware programs seems to cleared that up. I end up running the spyware programs once a day at least, and virtumonde always appears and won't go away.

Hello J_PAY,

Welcome to Bleeping Computer

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Windows Defender.
  • Click on Tools, General Settings.
  • Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

Also, please disable the shields for Spy Sweeper.

Hold off on ".....unplug my computer and go back to postal mail, TV, landlines phones, and a wood burning stove. " for the time being. ;)

This tool is not a toy. If used the wrong way you could trash your computer. Please use only under direction of a Helper. If you decide to do so anyway, please do not blame me or ComboFix.

1. Download this file - combofix.exe
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe
2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply please, along with a new HijackThis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Hello,

How is it running now please?

Your Java is way out of date, which leaves your computer vulnerable.

Updating Java
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6_u_7.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from one of these places:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Ant...ware_d5756.html
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Thanks,
tea
Please make a donation so I can keep helping people just like you.
Every little bit helps! :)
You can even use your credit card! Thank you!

Thanks again for the help. My computer seems to be running better, I haven't received any pop-ups while running FireFox in Safe Mode. I've only used IE briefly, but everything seemed fine. I'm optimistic that I won't have to move to a log cabin and unplug from the digital age.

I uninstalled the existing Java program, and installed JRE 6 u 7.

Here is the Malwarebyte log file:

Close all browsers and other windows except for HijackThis!, and click "Fix checked".

Please delete ComboFix and its accompanying folder C:\Qoobox. Empty your Recycle bin and reboot your computer.

Don't forget to re enable Tea Timer!!

Your last log only showed orphans, so I really think all is well now. :)

If there are no further problems:

Below I have included a number of recommendations on how to protect your computer in order to prevent future malware infections. Please take these recommendations seriously! These few simple steps can stave off the vast majority of spyware problems.

Regularly go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and download all the "critical updates" for Windows, including the latest version of Internet Explorer. This can patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You should also turn on the Windows automatic update feature.

It is very important to maintain your Firewall.
A tutorial on understanding and using firewalls may be found here.

In order to protect yourself against spyware, you should consider installing and running the following free programs:

SpywareBlaster
A tutorial on using SpywareBlaster to prevent spyware from ever installing on your computer may be found here.

SpywareGuard
A tutorial on using SpywareGuard for realtime protection against spyware and hijackers may be found here.

IE/Spyad:
It places over 5000 malicious websites and domains in your IE's restricted zone.
IE/Spyad

Make sure to keep these programs up-to-date and to run them regularly, as this can prevent a great deal of spyware hassle.

* Avoid illegal sites, because that's where most malware is present.
* Don't click on links inside popups.
* Don't click on links in spam messages claiming to offer anti-spyware software; because most of these so called removers ARE spyware.
* Download free software only from sites you know and trust. A lot of free software can bundle other software, including spyware.

Please make sure to run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep it up-to-date.

Take care!

Thanks again Tea, so far so good. I completed all of the steps you suggested, but I got stuck installing the Windows updates. I've tried twice to install XP SP3, and both times I ran into a grey pop up half way through that said "access denied" and the install reversed itself. Is it possible that one of the numerous security programs I have running is preventing the install?

Hello,

Let's just see then.........If it will let you download them, then do that. Then go offline and disable your protection programs and see if you can install the SP and updates. Let me know how you come out.

tea

Thanks again. That worked, I was able to install XP SP3 and the other required Windows updates. One final question, I already have Spybot, Spysweeper, McAfee Firewall/Anti Spyware, plus Windows Defender and Ad-Aware. Do I need all three of the additional programs at the bottom of your posting? And can these programs replace any of the existing programs I'm running, or should I should install and run all of them?

Hello there,

You're welcome. :) Glad it worked.

The programs I offered you are only to give you choices, and good, free ones at that. Running all of them at once would not be a good thing at all. You have Defender, Spybot, and Spysweeper all running real time? I would choose one of them only to run real time and use the others as on demand scanners. So one of those, plus your AdAware, plus all your McAfee should be plenty. But please keep in mind that nothing is perfect, so you still have to be careful where you go and what you download. :)

If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask. :)

Regards,
tea
