Hi all,

I have an issue with my computer that hopefully someone can assist me with. My "good" computer died on my last week, so until I get my new one next week, I'm stuck using the backup computer we have. The problem with this one is that the CDRW/DVD drive isn't able to read cds. When you put the cd into it the green light comes on, you can hear the "whirring" like it's trying to read the cd, and then it just stops. If you open the drive in my computer, it says please insert a disk, even if there is one inside of it. The driver hasn't been updated for a really long time, so maybe it has something to do with that, I'm not too sure. Earlier I tried to use Window's Update to update the driver, and one couldn't be found. My device name shows up as "HL-DT-ST CDRW/DVD GCC4482", I'm not sure of the maker. I am using Windows XP SP 2, and my computer is a Dell Dimension 4700. If anyone can assist me with what to do next or where I can find a driver for it would help me greatly, as I've been trying to find the correct driver with no luck. Thanks.

Have you tried cleaning the lens?

I find that the little cleaning disks work fine for me.

Worth reading: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f36/firmware-hl-d...gcc4482-192292/

Always bear in mind that firmware updates are akin to BIOS updates in that...there won't be anyone to blame if things go wrong.
