A friend asked me to fix this machine I set up about 2 years back.

Antivirus removed, firewall removed, anti spyware removed.

explorer.exe (2 copies) crash constantly, average about 20 second intervals.
I have tried to remove various dowload programmes, peer to peer etc, installed anti virus, firewall (crashes) anti spyware etc but not going forward yet.

Please can you look at the HJT log enclosed and advise

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

First, we need to backup your registry:
Please go to Start > Run
Paste in the following line:regedit /e c:\registrybackup.reg
Click OK.
It won't appear to be doing anything, that's normal.
Your mouse pointer may turn to an hour glass for a minute.
Please continue when it no longer has the hour glass.

Please open up Notepad and copy all of the items in the code box below.
Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fixthis.reg on your Desktop.
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,73,76,31,5f,30,00,00
Now double-click fixthis.reg.
A window will come up asking if you want to let it merge with the registry.
Click yes.
============
Then please go to Start>Control Panel>Add\Remove programs
then uninstall > Viewpoint Media Player

Then exit the Add\Remove programs list.
=====================================
Please download DAFT and save it to your desktop:
  • Double-click the daft.exe icon.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • Select everything it is displaying there
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Then rescan with DAFT again - it should say now that "All associations are OK"
  • Close DAFT if you receive that message. This means that it is fixed now.
============
Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    [kill explorer]
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Audio 4 part browse
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\byXNeETm.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\khfGvuVo.dll
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
    C:\WINDOWS\Tasks\AF1A1A8D91898C61.job
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\\Part browse safe hold
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellExecuteHooks\\{97F614AE-3B91-4A21-B0FD-CC459DD4237F}
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\khfGvuVo
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\Z
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\{6ace9dc1-dec9-11d9-821f-806d6172696f}
    [start explorer]
    emptytemp
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the light Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • OTMoveit2 will create a log of moved files in the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder. The log's name will appear as the date and time it was created, with the format mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log. Open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
==============================
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.

-- End of Deckard's System Scanner: finished at 2008-08-01 20:48:31 ------------

Just realised the system date on this machine is wrong. Showing as 1st August 08. I'll fix that now. Also been updated by Java. screen stopped failing (exporer) as well.

As an aside how do I remove this desktop search thing, it takes ages to settle down and let me in.
Thanks again

Hi PLease delete this folder > C:\Program Files\trust spam hold
===============
After that please re-open Hijackthis and click on "Do a system scan only"
Then place a check mark next to these entries below:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi...fo/bt_side.html
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O4 - Global Startup: Windows Search.lnk = C:\Program Files\Windows Desktop Search\WindowsSearch.exe

Now click on Fix Checked and then close Hijackthis.
====================================
Let me know if that gets rid of the desktop search please and post a new Hijackthis log and we will wrap it up.
Please do not pm for help, post it in the forums instead.

If I am helping you and have not responded for 48 hours please send me a pm as I don't always get notifications.

My help is always free, however, if you would like to make a donation to me for the help I have provided please click here Posted Image

It appears that you will need more Ram to help with the slowness issue.
You are running only 256MB's of Ram and that is minimal at best.
I recommend double 512 MB's that amount to have better performance.
===========================================
Please download OT CLeanit from Here save it to your desktop.
Double click on OT Clean it to run it.
Then click on Clean up.
Restart yor computer when prompted.
This will remove what tools we used.
=============================
Delete\uninstall anything else that we have used.

System Restore
Then I will need you to reset your System Restore points.
The link below shows how to create a clean restore point.
How to Turn On and Turn Off System Restore in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310405/en-us

If you are using Vista then see this link > http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/...143.html#manual
=====================================
After that your log is clean. :thumbsup:

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people.
You do not have to have all or any of them they are only suggestions.
This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

Spybot Search & Destroy-Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.

Spyware Blaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.

Spywareguard-Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.

IE-SPYAD- puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.

Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.

Tony Klein article To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein.

You are welcome :)
