Exe Files And Patches For Applications...

i have a missing link in a program of mine so i got the information from the program site for it (as it was a gliche) and it says run the patch and then place it progam files/ etc/ etc... how do i patch something?

i also have been told that i need to replace my program.exe file whatever it would be with another one... how do you replace the programs exe file?
