Hi I'm new to this forum and I would appreciate any help you can give me. I have a lot of "stuff" that is running in the background that is slowing my computer and I suspect that there may be some spyware in there.

First, I could not download the Deckard system scanner but I do have the latest verion of Hijackthis which I used to scan the computer and that Log is below.

My operating system is MS Windows XP service pack 2 and I have 22 pages of stuff that is autorun. Let me know if there is other info you need to help.

Hi motormom

There's nothing obviously bad going on here... ( but we will double check) just a bit of general cleaning, i think.

Step 1
Click on start... settings... control panel and double-click on Add or Remove Programs. From within Add or Remove Programs uninstall the following if they exist:

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java™ 6 Update 2
Java™ SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

They are all old versions that should have been removed each time the latest version is installed.
DO NOT remove Java™ 6 Update 7

Reboot the system when completed.

Step 2
Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these items.
O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Toolbar Helper - {02478D38-C3F9-4efb-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9ECB9560-04F9-4bbc-943D-298DDF1699E1} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {0BF43445-2F28-4351-9252-17FE6E806AA0} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {1F2F4C9E-6F09-47BC-970D-3C54734667FE} -
O16 - DPF: {CE28D5D2-60CF-4C7D-9FE8-0F47A3308078} -

Optional
These lines are not bad, but they are not necessary to run at startup.
If you need them you can start them manually.
Ticking the following lines may save you valuable resources.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Drag'n'Drop_Autolaunch] "C:\Program Files\Iomega\Iomega HotBurn Pro\Autolaunch.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe"

Then close all other windows, browsers etc--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Reboot your computer to complete the process.

Step 3
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Step 4
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

In your next reply, please submit:
MBAM scan result
and a new Hjt log.

Thanks.

Hi motormom

Let's just double check with another online scan.... as MBAM found a few things.... we can't be too careful

Please run a BitDefender Online Scan
  • Click I Agree to agree to the EULA.
  • Allow the ActiveX control to install when prompted.
  • Click Click here to scan to begin the scan.
  • Please refrain from using the computer until the scan is finished. This might take a while to run, but it is important that nothing else is running while you scan.
  • When the scan is finished, click on Click here to export the scan results.
  • Save the report to your desktop so you can post it in your next reply.
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.

Hi Starbuck

Things are indeed looking better. My computer boots much faster now which is pretty good for her age. No freezes so far since the last scan.

mbam said it found 1 virus which it did not remove. It was ID as 1678595 what ever that means.

Here's the HJT log you asked for.

Thank you, thank you for helping

Hi motormom

mbam said it found 1 virus which it did not remove.

Can you start MBAM again for me... when the main page comes up, click on the 'Logs' tab at the top and let me have the results of the last scan.
They are date marked....just double click on the last scan result.
It'll open in 'notepad' ... please copy and paste the result back to me.
I just want to check and see what it couldn't remove.
We don't want to leave anything to chance.

Thanks.

Hi motormom

I guess that my deficiency in tech knowledge is showing.

You're doing fine.... we're nearly finished.

Reports are looking good now.
Just one little thing to check....

Let's make sure that the 'Install_AIM.exe' icon has gone.
Please navigate to the following file/folder: (the one in bold)
C:\Documents and Settings\Wilda\Desktop\unused icons\Install_AIM.exe

If you are unsure how to do this:
  • click on the 'Start' button... then 'My Computer'
  • Click on the 'C' drive
  • Click 'Documents and Settings' folder
  • Click on 'Wilda' folder
  • Click on 'Desktop'
  • Click on 'Unused Icons'
  • If 'Install_AIM.exe' is there... right click on it and then select 'delete'
Is everything running ok now?

Hi Starbuck

I followed your instructions and removed AIM installer icon to the recycle bin and it triggered a warning from Eset Nod 32 that it had " quarentined" c:\ recycled\ Dc2.exe?????

But everything seems to be working OK otherwise.

Thanks Starbuck, you've helped a lot.

Hi motormom

it triggered a warning from Eset Nod 32 that it had " quarentined" c:\ recycled\ Dc2.exe?????

That's good then. it's safe where it is now.

Just a little finishing off now.

Now you should Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the Restore Point a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "OK".
  • Select the drive for cleaning then click OK (usually 'C' drive)
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
I'd advise keeping the MBAM program.
Update it and run it once a week and it'll help to keep you sorted.

To find out how you may have been infected....read this topic:
So how did i get infected?

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy. You should also scan your computer with this program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

Thank you Starbuck

I have followed your instructions and now have my old computer performing in it's usual way.
I will institute a schedule of updating these protective programs. I will be more vigilant in protecting my computer in the future.

Thank you again from a grateful Motormom
