My PC got this message (blue desktop, yellow banner, black writing) earlier today. I ran my Avast antivirus program, which actually tried to clean up the system by restarting it a couple of times and doing scans. But the nasty message is still there. I looked through some of your past posts and tried to troubleshoot this myself. Using some guidance from one of your posts and my own guesses, I cleaned up the temporary Internet files folder, the Temp folder in the C:\Documents and Settings\Farhan\Local Settings folder, and also looked for likely culprits in C:\WINDOWS and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM folders. I am pretty sure I did not delete any important file. I did find a .jpg file (weird name but I don't remember it) that is what's on the desktop, and deleted it, but to no avail.

Anyways, I am reproducing the results from the two files (separated by lines of "="s) you guys asked for. I am also attaching the two Notepad files.

I really hope you can help me.

Just now the PC went to the blue screen of death and had a message that Windows was going to shut down to prevent further damage. There was a message about the kernel but I was not quick enough to write it down before it went back to the normal Word document that is currently open on the Desktop.

I have unplugged my network cable from the infected PC, and am using my work PC. I also deleted all my passwords to credit card and bank sites in case this is a Trojan. I will keep checking my email on this laptop and then reconnect the infected PC to the Net when you guys are able to help me. I can see this is becoming quite an epidemic today.

Farhan

P.S.: In the process of trying to fix the PC before I sent the first email I downloaded AntiVirus XP 2008, and now I cannot uninstall it or turn it off and it's really pissing me off.

Another data point for whoever gets to my post. I saw that I am dangerously close to filling a 145 GB drive, and deleted a bunch of stuff so now I have less than 100 GB of stuff on the drive, so it's about 66% full instead of the 85%+ that you can see in the diagnostics I sent you guys per your instructions.

Hello and welcome to BC

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. We aim to provide the valuable service known to come from BC to every member we can, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Upon completing the steps below a staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

Please see here for instructions
how to install HijackThis and make a logfile. Save it into convenient location and include it to your next reply, please.

Next
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Please post back with HijackThis log and Kaspersky report.

Regards
Microsoft MVP Consumer Security
