Hello aommaster,

I apologise for the delay, the forum is busy.

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following Folder:

C:\PROGRAM FILES\TRENDMICRO\HIJACKTHIS

Right-click to create a shortcut on your desktop.
----------------------------------------------
Disable Windows Defender until the computer is clean
Windows Defender normally provides real-time protection from spyware, however it may interfere with what we need to do. We will disable it until the machine is clean when it can be re-enabled.
  • Open Windows Defender
  • Select Tools and then General Settings
  • Under Real Time Protection Options uncheck Turn on real-time protection
  • Select Save
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix at your DESKTOP:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

Additional links to download the tool:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Note: The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Hello aommaster,

That's the correct report. It means the Recovery Console was installed properly.

Let's continue.
----------------------------------------------
Remove one of your Anti Virus programs.
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

Symantec
AVG8

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please remove one of them.
----------------------------------------------
As i believe Symantec has expired, use Add/Remove programs and unistall all Norton or Symantec products found there.

After that run the tool below to completely remove Symantec.

REMOVE NORTON

Please click HERE and follow the instructions to download and run the norton removal tool for your own version.
----------------------------------------------
P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

BitComet
LimeWire

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun...protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm
See Clean/Infected P2P Programs here

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

If you choose not to remove them, please do not use them until this computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

O14 - IERESET.INF: START_PAGE_URL=http://help.cableone.net << If the URL is not the provider of your computer or your ISP fix this line.

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
Download and Run OTMoveIt2

Download OTMoveIt2 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\349168
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winver.bat
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
----------------------------------------------
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware report.
A new HijackThis log.

Hi there!

So I asked him to remove Symantec, and it seems that nothing was found in the add/remove programs. My guess is that it was improperly installed. I just had him move on and continue with the Norton 2006 removal tool.

As for the P2P programs, I should have given you a heads up about them (I was aware of them when I looked at his logs), but he doesn't have them running in the background processes. He only uses them when he needs to download.

OTMoveit2:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\349168 moved successfully.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winver.bat moved successfully.

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.2 log created on 08282008_141722

Malware Bytes Anti-malware encountered many errors during the scan. According to him, this is what the error said:
An error occurred. Please report the following error code to the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware support team. Error code(731, 81)

I did ask him to search for the log, but he said the folder was empty.

Here's the HJT log he generated:

Hello aommaster,

Thanks for the reports.

An error occurred. Please report the following error code to the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware support team. Error code(731, 81)

Already reported it!
----------------------------------------------
Symantec is completely removed now.
----------------------------------------------

As for the P2P programs, I should have given you a heads up about them (I was aware of them when I looked at his logs), but he doesn't have them running in the background processes. He only uses them when he needs to download.

Ok, but using them is a very nice way to get infected.
Please explain it to him.
----------------------------------------------
JavaRa

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***
  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.
Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 following the instructions below:
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and click on Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
----------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
JavaRa report.
Kaspersky report.
A new HijackThis log.
How is the pc behaving?

Hey Chryssi!

Just wanted to let you know that this log is still active (so that you don't close it). I've had my friend run JavaRa and he's already generated a log:

Finished reporting.

However, since he was moving house, he currently does not have access to an internet connection so a Kaspersky scan would not be possible. Please give him a few day to get everything sorted

Hello aommaster,

Thanks for JavaRa report, and for letting me know that your friend is moving.
Have in mind he should update his Java before attemtpting to scan with Kaspersky.

We are about the end of the cleaning process.
Kaspersky will show any bad remainants, or if he is totally clean.

I hope he is back soon!

Ahh yes. I forgot to mention that he did download the update for Java and successfully installed it before he moved.

I've already told him that this Kaspersky scan is one of the more important steps to ensure that his computer doesn't get re-infected, so hopefully, it should be done pretty soon.

Thanks again
