I've got Windows XP with 250 GB storage and "90 percent free"... and am having dreadful woes today and hope someone can help by double-checking I haven't picked up something nasty.

Computer worked perfectly until I went to my one site this morning and in the middle of browsing from page to page, the trouble started (am confident that I did not pick up anything nasty at Thoughtvent though! ).

Problem:
Computer slowed down and pages wouldn't load and then suddenly nothing responded (mouse worked) but pages wouldn't move.
Tried restarting and it refused to shut down.
Tried Ctrl & Alt & Delete and chose 'Shut Down'.
It shut down and when restarted, while the desktop looked normal, no icons loaded.
Tried manually shutting down and restarting 5 minutes later - same result.
Took tower cover off and use air to clean - it actually restarted and icons loaded. (This time without tray icon for speakers, though)
Used 'System Restore" ... worked for a few minutes normally and then same problems once again.
(Shall keep on doing the above and hopefully it will keep things running at least for awhile).

Steps taken so far:
Ran AVG scan
Ran SpyBot Search and Destroy
Ran Rogue Remover
(All above are up to date)
Installed HiJack this (log below(

I have a program called 'RegCleaner' but am hesitant to use it after hearing so many nightmare stories - eep!

Know all of you are ever so busy but would truly appreciate your assistance...

Thanks ever so much,
Mara

Hi Mara,
There appears to be no malware present in your hjt log, however lets dig a little deeper.

Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Thanks SO much! Off to follow your above instructions now and sorry I didn't get back sooner. (Somehow I must have forgotten to tick "enable email notification of replies").

If I didn't know better, I'd think a mean little creature has taken over my computer - huge, gentle sigh - for I can't even get IE to work. It opens, I paste the Kaspersky address in and poof, it either closes itself or the window shown before pops up. Am going to give it a try using FireFox - thanks again for helping me with this - truly, truly appreciate it!

Oh, sometimes I could just grind the enamel from my teeth over these computers!

Managed to connect to the scan via FireFox - and it worked great. For nearly an hour - and then suddenly went off my screen.

Tried 'History' and got back to the appropriate page but it had to start the scan all over again. Another many minutes and poof, it went off my screen once again. Am retrying but ugh to my computer.

Yipee, finally succeeded! - and shall attach both the results from the Kaspersky Online scan and results from new HiJack This scan below.

Also, since my original post, I have:

a) UNinstalled Zone Alarm (after doing this I could connect to internet again) - and activated the built-in Windows replacement
 Installed Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (lots of cookies only found)
c) Installed SUPERAntiSpyware (only cookies found)
d) Installed Revo Uninstaller (does not show all the programs, though)
e) Uninstalled Spybot Search and Destroy
f) Uninstalled Ad-Aware

It's reassuring that no obvious 'bug' has popped up but although finally able to both connect to the internet and have the pages load (before it would often connect but pages would refuse to load), am still having a few woes:

a) When computer boots, on top of the usual desk top, a full screen showing C: Programs with a full page of yellow file folders denoting each program within computer
(easy enough to close this page, though)
:) Speaker and headphone woes:

Oops, sorry about that!

Continued ...

When computer boots, can hear the 'birds chirping' and it it shuts down, the wolves 'howling' through the speakers ... but...

There is no sound when playing games ... the volume/speaker icon has vanished from the task bar ... computer says "no devise found" when trying to adjust via Start>Accessories, etc ...

And, when trying to use the headphone set (Logitech)... if I call someone (using Google Talk), I can hear their voice - but over the computer speakers only - and they can't hear my voice at all, not through the headphones nor on their computer speakers.

Have tried 'System Restore' over and over, back as far as it will allow me to with no success - so thanks ever so much once again for your kind and patient help with this!

OTScanIt

Download OTScanIt to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.
  • Open the OTScanIt folder and double-click on OTScanIt to start the program.
    • In the Files Created Within group click 30 days
    • In the Files Modified Within group select 30 days
    • In the File String Search group select Non-Microsoft
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.
Please post the resulting log here.

My computer doesn't like "OTScanit", I'm afraid - gentle smile.

I installed the program and believe that the term is 'false positive' when AVG scan says it contained viruses  (see below sample, please).

Clicked on the icon sitting on my desktop and got the below:

(I know I'd never get a "Trojan" by downloading a file recommended here at our Bleeping - so just thought I'd post the above images here for those with a similar program following behind me).

Think, even without this latest download and scan, that things are looking up with my computer, Mike. That pesky IE has behaved itself and stopped throwing up those windows (think it may have been by finding 'reset all defaults' in the IE 6 program) ... not that I use IE, just leave it there for Windows to do auto up-dates through, and when needed to download programs required to fix things.

And after reading your report with relief that it seems I have no 'bug' remaining, I've just kept running all my safety programs twice a day rather than once and best of all, after struggling with 'System Restore, it finally let me move back far enough to get things working well once again.

Whatever 'bug' I'd picked up seems to have been defeated - yipee!!! - and I can't think you enough for taking the time to help me with my computer woes, kind man!

Kindest thoughts and a huge thank you!
