Hi

Surfing the net a couple of nights ago I clicked on a link and the page froze. I forced a reboot. Ever since then my desktop wallpaper has changed from the orange Compaq default to a bright blue (although the orange flashes up briefly when first powering up) and I get the message when switching on:
Can not find script file "C:\Documents and Settings\Username\local settings\temp\.ttRANDOM NUMBER.tmp.vbs

I ran Spybot which removed some things but didn't solve.

I ran norton anti virus. It found joke.blusod but didn't seem to be able to delete it. I then ran anti virus in SAFE mode and it found nothing at all.

But I still have the blue screen. Also, on time ou the screen saver produces a full page error message in large font (a dummy one I assume) which covers the whole page and says it needs to restart. I haven't seen any pop ups.

Can anyone please tell me how to shift this little devil????

Hello psmithy and  to Bleeping Computer.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Thanks so much.

I downloaded Malwarebytes. Having switched off Norton I followed your instructions to run it. Whilst it was scanning I got messages from the virus AntiVirus XP 2008 (which I hadn't seen before) coming up and saying that had found some 2,000 problems! I closed that of course and ignored the repeated messages it kept producing.

Once Malwarebytes had finished it found a lot of malware which I proceeded to delete. Then I rebooted and hurrah, the error message didn't come up again. I could also change the desktop background back to normal. All looks good - how can I confirm that I am 100% clear though?

Here is the Malwarebytes log report - thanks again

Did you reboot the computer after using MBAM? If it encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you need to restart the computer so the malware can be fully removed. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. Your log indicates some files will be deleted on reboot. If you have not rebooted, make sure you do this. When done, rescan again with MBAM and check all items found for removal. Then click the Logs tab and copy/paste the contents of the new report in your next reply. If you did reboot, then rescan again anyway and post a new log.

Also, let us know how your is computer running and if there are any more signs of infection.
