I have scanned for viruses, spyware, trojans, registry errors, defragged, etc., using various programs but I still haven't been able to find what is causing my computer to be super slow and almost impossible to use. The only lead I have is that the scanningprocess.exe starts taking alot of the CPU memory, and when I set its priority to low I am able to stop the majority of the slowness and I am able to use the computer (although some programs still take longer than normal). It will take anywhere from 3000-15,000kb memory. Also I have noticed that the System Idle Process also takes up alot of CPU at certain times, but it doesn't affect the performance of the computer as bad as the scanningprocess.exe. Finally, I have also noticed that the Internet Explorer is really slow too regardless of whether I lower the priority of the scanningprocess or not, yet my firefox seems to be working all right. And when I try getting updates directly from the microsoft website (trying to see if there was a fix here), it just stays in the "scanning your computer" page, and doesn't ever stop. Help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Brandonbrooks32

Welcome to Bleeping Computer!

Sorry about the delay. We're all volunteers here, and it's been very busy.

If you still need help, please post a new DSS.scan report to make sure nothing has changed.
Please post only the main.txt report, and I'll be happy to take a look at it for you.

Thank you for your patience.

Here it is. I redid some of the scan on spyware/virus/ registry to make sure we can focus on the main problem and not the little things.

Hello Brandonbrooks32

Your logs look clean to me.
However, we will run an online scan to make sure.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

White Warrior.

nothing came up, but I've noticed that the memory usage by the scanninprocess has increased past 60,000kb certain times. IDK if this will help.

Hello Brandonbrooks32

The Kaspersky scan was also clean.

To improve your speed, I suggest you clean your temporary files.
  • Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the Delete Cookies button
  • Next to it, Click the Delete Files button
  • When prompted, place a check in: Delete all offline content, click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click Ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them
Finally: Reboot the computer.
Take a look at this page created by miekiemoes, on slow systems, and some things you can try to do to try to improve it. Help! My computer is slow!

from the day I posted the second kaspersky report until now, the computer has gotten back to normal speed. The funny thing is that I didn't do anything different or as much as I did the first time around (just a virus and registry scan this time). I have already clean my internet memory on both IE, and FF, as well as done some of the things on those articles just to be sure. Thanks for all the help!

Hello Brandonbrooks32

I am glad your computer is back to normal

Please read the following suggestions to make your computer more secure, and to help prevent possible future infections.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Update regularly. This will ensure your computer always has the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.

White Warrior.
