I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot.

Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it as a reply.

Thanks for your reply. Here is a new Hijackthis log file with msconfig on normal startup, unfortunately I could not follow your instructions to the letter as I had already checked all the boxes last evening after I wrote on the forum and restarted the pc.

Followed your instructions but 2 of the items will not delete as you can see from this new log. Symptoms on the pc remain the same. Wouldn't this be expected if the registry is being recovered from a log at boot up?

Its microsoft antispyware interfering. Right click on the microsoft antispyware task bar icon and shut it down and then fix those two entries and reboot.

Are they now gone?

Sorry to be such a pain but there was no difference with Microsoft antispyware turned off. Entry 016-DPF: {O4E:14E5 etc says it does not exist anymore.
Entry 023-Service: Autocomplete etc goes through the motions of removal but the entry remains. Is it time to be using regedit?

Compo.

Hi. Please download and install the program Registry Lite from here:

http://www.resplendence.com/reglite

Once it is installed, please double click on the icon that should now be on your desktop. If an icon is not there, then check under programs portion of the Start Menu.

Once it is opened, copy and paste the below line, into the address field of Registrar Lite.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\

And press enter. You will now be presented with new information in the bottom right and left sections and on the right section.

Right click on Autocomplete and delete it .

Then navigate to :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects

and right click and delete :

{04E:14E5-63AF-4236-83C6-A7ADCBF9BD02}

Then reboot and post a new log

OK some good news and some bad news, I installed reglite as you suggested, I found and deleted 023 Service: Autocomplete etc but 016-DPF 04E is not there, just as Hijackthis says, it no longer exists. This is driving me crazy!! I wonder if the following info helps....despite the fact that the IE window causes an error the computer can still access the outside world, AVG can update, MSN messenger can sign on and I can access other computers on my network. So here's my latest log, Microsoft antispyware was turned off while making changes. Even the error report gets sent without an error occuring.

With MSAS closed, try to fix this again:

O16 - DPF: {04E:14E5-63AF-4236-83C6-A7ADCBF9BD02} -

Do me a favor and do the following:

Download rkfiles.zip
UNZIP the contents to a permanent folder

Reboot in SAFE MODE !! Important !!
°To get into the Safe mode as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key". Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Doubleclick rkfiles.bat
It will scan for a while.
Wait till the doswindow closes and reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt in your next reply along with a new hjt log

Hello and thanks for your perseverence on this matter, it seems such a small thing at first but it looks like it needs a sledge hammer to crack it.

Ran RKFiles and then rebooted back to normal, here are the 2 logs...

It is looking for suspicous files on your computer.

Download RegSrch.zip from here:

http://billsway.com/vbspage/vbsfiles/RegSrch.zip

Unzip it and then double-click on the regsrch.vbs file. When it runs it will prompt you for a string to search for. Enter {04E:14E5-63AF-4236-83C6-A7ADCBF9BD02} into that field and press enter.

It will run for a while silently and then create a report. Please paste the contents of that report into a reply to this topic.

*Note: If you have Norton script blocking installed, disable it or allow the script to run or this tool won't work!

Will do what you suggest but thought I would just let you know what I have found nosing around....
Did a search in Regedit and it found 04E etc in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\code store database\distribution units it gives an error message when trying to open, if I right click on the entry and select permissions I get an open window stating "unable to display security information". So I rebooted into safe mode and ran Registrar Lite and found the entry, on the right a red flag shows and the name is given as ACCESS DENIED, right clicking allows me to look at the permissions, at this stage I bailed out not being quite sure what action to take. I will now do what you suggested and post back soon.

Tried using the regsrch.vb script: C:\Documents and Settings\Terry\My Documents\Downloads\RegSrch\RegSrch.vbs
Line: 40
Char: 5
Error: Out of string space: 'Split'
Code: 800A000E
Source: Microsoft VBScript runtime error

I rebooted into safe mode, logged in as Administrator and tried again, got the same error other than the path being slightly different.

Sorry to be a pain, don't we just love a challenge!!
