I got 1 G RAM in my XP Pro, Pentium III/700 very perfectly maintained modest PC. How much shared memory must I set for getting the best? Many thanks and greetings

By shared memory I'm guessing that you are referring to the ratio of physical memory (RAM) to virtual memory? There should be a ratio of 1.5 X RAM, 1.5 X 1024MB = 1536MB of virtual memory. Your computer should automatically adjust this when you change the amount of RAM.

Hope this was what you were looking for.

Sorry, but your most kind answer is too Spartan for me. Friendly greetings

Hi! Adviced by other most kind friend inside BC I left THAT setting at the leisure of the system. I am talking of the shared memory that's setted from the blue screen at the starting with pressing "delete". Before I got my current 1G RAM I had 2. Then I manually moved to 16, having choices up to 64. Then I would wish to know which would be the best. Thanks and greetings

Shared video memory option in the BIOS setup screen?

Having 1GB in the system, there would be no great loss allocating the maximum 64MB to video. However for many purposes less may be fine.

If your system is using on-board video with shared system memory, that would be one reason for slow performance (eg slow drawing of screen icons). Increasing the allocated memory may help, also ensure the video drivers are up-to-date. The greatest improvement would be to install a separate video card, if your system has an AGP slot.

Top 5 things that never get done:

Many thanks. Let me tell you that a young friend, that's "suposed" to understand a lot about this (doesn't know Socrates...), told me "By no means, more than 16" (no explanations, of course). Why? asked myself. Actually I am not sure what kind of video memory I have. Everybody here arround seems to believe that I have a separate card, less I. It's because I do not read anything about video card in anyplace. I have updated drivers recently (do I have to uninstall previous ones in XP Pro?). Just now I see 0.98G as my RAM, that figured as 1 G a short while ago (I do not know why). Thanks a lot and greetings

The smaller figure is what is available, there are applications that are using the rest, like your video.

16MB is probably fine for shared video, considering that you don't game.

Gaming is the primary reason why there is now so much RAM attached to the video function.
