I am trying to determine if the internet speeds promised by my provider are achievable based on my current system setup and I need to be pointed in the right direction to figure this out.

I imagine that upload/download speeds are influenced by many factors that I probably haven't thought about yet, so its time I learned more. If I just use the speed tests I found on the net, the results say I am not even coming close to the numbers that they advertise about (and charge me for). so there must be more to the equation that I don't know.

My setup involves a cable modem and router, so if they don't play nice together it probably impacts the speeds, but what about the way the cable gets the data to the motherboard/processor (a network adapter?)

If anyone has a link to a tutorial or previous post that might help me learn more about how to test and improve the speed, I would appreciate it very much!
