Hi! Thank you so much in advance for any assistance you can give me!

I'm running windows XP Home. I usually use firefox to browse the web. I turned off my spyware service about a month ago because it was acting funny, and I forgot to turn it back on. Oops, I know. Yesterday my computer froze, and it would freeze after about 5 minutes every time I rebooted it. It also said that c:1.exe was trying to load. I restarted my spyware program and ran some in-depth virus scans, and eventually got that 1.exe thing erased. But now my internet is acting weird. I can open some websites with no problem, but most of them never open. I can open google's home page, but I searching for anything never results in anything - it just looks like the page is still trying to load. It's like that with 80% of websites I try to open. This happens with Firefox and IE. Strange...
I FINALLY got bleepingcomputer to open through an MSN web browser. YAY!!!!
Today I have run a ton of antivirus scans, using NOD32, Trendmicro, and Panda. I have scanned with Adaware and Spyware Doctor. I have run CCleaner and Registry Mechanic. I barely have a basic working knowledge of these things. Now I'm stuck.

Possibly random info: My computer seems extra quiet now too. It usually has a constant humming sound, and now it's nearly silent.

The last time I had a computer problem, y'all at bleeping computer were great at helping out, so I'm so glad I was finally able to open this website. Please help again!

Let me know if you need any more information - I'm sure I've forgotten something. I'd love to figure out why my internet won't open much anymore.

THANKS!

Yes, I'm finding that my MSN browser will open more things than Firefox or IE. This is very frustrating. Something is definitely causing problems. This computer really needs to be cleaned out I think.

Is your browser updated?

Have you dumped your cache?

I deleted and re-downloaded both Firefox and IE.

I cleared the cache per the instructions in the link above.

No change on being able to open much of anything using FF or IE

Also noticed, I usually download at about 154 kbps, and all night it only got up to 5 or 6 max. Seems related.

What can I try next?
