I have had this problem for several weeks now and have tried to fix it myself, but unfortunately have been unsuccessful. It started out as the Privacy Protection, Error Cleaner virus. I had the common problems (based on internet forums): the 3 icons; ridiculous amounts of pop-ups when connected to the internet; my programs tab vanished from the Start menu, along with my computer, control panel, search/run, etc; and the ability to scan my computer through Symantec Anti-Virus disappeared. The clock also shows VIRUS ALERT! and has changed to military time. I did a lot of research on this problem from various websites, including this one, and tried to handle it myself. After a ton of trouble and tedious time wasted I was able to get a grip on things.

I was able to update all of my protection programs, which were AdAware, Spybot S&D, and Symantec Anti-Virus. Once updated (which was the difficult part) and run in safe mode each program picked up a variety of threats that were undetected beforehand. The major threats detected included Virtumonde, AdRevolver, and Zlob. Because of repeated suggestions I eventually downloaded the free version of AVG 8.0, SUPERAntiSpyware, and COMODO Firewall to help with the process. I also switched my web browser from IE to Firefox. Because I was still unable to scan for viruses with Symantec when not in safe mode I decided to just delete it and stick with AVG. Of the 3 major threats listed only AdRevolver is still commonly detected.

So after all of this work I am not able to access the internet with no problems, the 3 icons do not reappear with every start up, no more pop-ups, and the programs tab has returned to my start menu. But the clock is still in mil. time and VIRUS ALERT! still present. Also, the other previous listed items are still missing from the Start menu. I am able to access them through the windows key+R, but that is it. Once in My Computer, you can only see the documents folders, not C:\ or D:\ drives.

My computer seems to be running regularly, but still contain some of these problems. Something new that has happened since I have tried to fix things is a window at start up saying "C:\WINDOWS\system32\issmynnt.dll module could not be found." Is there something I can do to fix it completely?

Here is my HJT log: (this is my first time posting a HJT log, or any posting for that matter, so please bear with me if something is done incorrectly)

Hello and welcome to BC!

Please download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combofix.exe to launch the application.

Follow the prompts that will be displayed on the screen.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.
When finished, it should produce a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Hello D-Tro and thanks for the quick response

It was much more difficult to run the ComboFix than I thought. The first time it created a new restore point and had to restart my computer. Once rebooted there were 5 new icons on my desktop, all of which were old shortcuts that I had deleted awhile back. Also, the VIRUS ALERT! is gone from the clock, which CF told me it was going to change the clock settings. Plus the run, search, document folders, control panel, etc are back on the Start Menu. But the first 3 efforts to produce a log were unsuccessful. It gave me a warning of "Cannot export temp00: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error."

After trying the third time I decided to restart my computer again and try one more time before replying, which worked out because I got a log. I thought that the latter information might mean something more to you than it does to me, not sure...

Anyway here is the CF log:

Just a couple of things before we continue here, can you clarify the following please:

So after all of this work I am not able to access the internet with no problems

I know it was a typo, but i need to know whether the internet is working or not..

Also, we need to install the recovery console onto your system; it's an important security and safety feature which you really do need to have installed. You can install the recovery console regardless of whether or not you have the XP cd that came with the operating system - I recommend you download the recovery console installation file from the internet, it's only about 4mb in size, so it shouldn't take too long to download.

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994
At that page, scroll down and click on the appropriate download for your version of Windows XP (Home or Professional) and the service pack level that you have installed. When you click on the link to download the file, make sure you save it directly to your desktop.

If you are unsure what version of Windows you have and what Service Pack is installed, you can follow these instructions to gain that information:

1) Click on the Start button.
2) Click on the Run menu option.
3) In the Open: field type the following: sysdm.cpl and then click on the OK button.
4) A screen will appear showing information about your installation.
Under the System: category you should see your Windows version and the installed Service Pack.

Once the Microsoft file has finished downloading, close all open windows and programs, then drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it. This is shown in the following image:
Posted Image
Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console. When complete, a log named CF_RC.txt will open. Please post the contents of that log.

Apologies about the complication with running combo-fix, there are often unforeseen delays when creating things like restore points and backing up the registry. Do not worry about this for the time being..

Thanks for clarifying the status of your internet. Don't worry about the recovery console, I didn't realise you were on SP3, and at the moment there is not a comptabile version from microsoft, so you'll have to go without it for the moment. It's not a really big deal, a lot of computers don't have it, it's just a useful safety precaution in case things go wrong..

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer during HijackThis Cleanup
Then, Download ResetTeaTimer.bat.
Double click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer.

Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following if still present:

O2 - BHO: Yahoo! Toolbar Helper - {02478D38-C3F9-4EFB-9B51-7695ECA05670} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C8AA1126-AE70-4DC6-B525-2232C74C44DC} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkkJyYQg.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [f0dfc33b] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\issmynnt.dll",b

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Open hijackthis, click 'config' (bottom right) Choose the tab 'misc Tools' on top.
Choose 'delete a file on reboot'. In the field, copy and paste the filepath a few lines below.
Click open. Hijackthis will tell you that this file will be deleted on next reboot and if you want to reboot now.
When asked if you want to reboot now, say Yes:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\issmynnt.dll

Allow the PC to reboot, if it doesn't do it automatically, please reboot manually.

Open notepad and copy and paste the following text in the quote box into the window:

@echo off
sc stop Winho18
sc delete Winho18

Save this as fix.bat
Choose to save as all files.
This is how the batch must look afterwards: Posted Image
Doubleclick fix.bat and let the program run.
A small black dos window will flash, this is normal.

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan
Note that this scanner will only work on Internet Explorer, so please use this browser for the scan.
Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.

When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer"
When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text"
Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply, along with a new Hijackthis log.

OK i did everything you said. You said that the fix.bat file will flash a dos window, which it did, but the entire process lasted about 1 second. Is it supposed to be that short, or did something not work correctly?

Also, the link for the Kaspersky Webscan didn't work. It took me to an invalid website. I search for it myself and ran it from their website. I believe it did the same thing, but ran slightly different than the instructions you left me. After it finished it said that there were no harmful files found, or no malware, and the scan report was blank. So I don't have any Kaspersky scan results, other than there was nothing...

Here is the new HJT log:

Apologies for the broken link, it looks as though Kaspersky have just changed it..

The logs are looking a lot better, but I just want to do one final check for any leftover malware..

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation finishes, leave both 'Update' and 'Launch' checked. Click Finish.

MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here.

On the Scanner tab, ensure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected, then click on the Scan button.
If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
When the scan finishes, a box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

I will be going out of town tomorrow morning for the entire weekend. I'll be able to check it tomorrow morning, do anything else you'd like me to, and respond then, but that will be it until Monday morning. Thanks again for all the help!

Yes everything is running fine. Thanks a lot D-Tro!

I have one final question if you don't mind. Through all of this I have downloaded the free version of AVG, SUPERAntiSpyware free edition, COMODO firewall, ComboFix, and HJT. I previously already had Spybot S & D and Ad-Aware SE Plus. Do I need to keep all of these programs on my computer, or should I delete some? I've heard some programs can interfere with others. If you would advise to keep all of them I will, but for the sake of possibly freeing up space on my hard drive I was wondering if I really don't need any of them.

Thanks again for all of your help!

You're welcome, glad I could help!

You need to keep a firewall, an antivirus and an antispyware program installed at all times! I would recommend you keep AVG8, Comodo and SuperAntiSpyware - they would protect your PC well without (to my knowledge) any conflicts. You can now remove Combofix and HJT if you wish now, and although they may be useful, Spyboy and Ad-Aware are slightly less efficient in removing malware nowadays.

Hope this helps..
