My friend and I were having a discussion as to whether you can go longer without eating or sleeping. He saw an article about some guy staying awake for 11 days straight. I don't believe this is physically possible for anyone to do, but maybe he was drugged up or something. Anyway, I believe the average person can go longer without eating than sleeping. What does everyone else think about this?

I prefer not to find out through personal experience.

I do remember reading that one can live without food or without sleep much longer than one can live without water.
Now you have three instead of two variables.
Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one should be silent.

You know, I've slept through a meal before,

but I've never eaten while sleeping.

Don't know if that helps.

If one holds out for as long as they can, in the end, they will fall asleep.

Don't know if that helps, either.

I know you think you understand what you thought I said,
but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant!

In May 2007 a British man named Tony Wright stayed awake for 266 hours, just a little more than 11 days. He kept his eyes open by eating carrot juice, bananas, avocados, pineapple and nuts.

The exhausting feat broke Randy Gardner's 1964 world record of 254 sleep-free hours.

Above quote from here.

At the age of 74 and already slight of build, Mahatma Gandhi, the famous nonviolent campaigner for India's independence, survived 21 days of total starvation while only allowing himself sips of water.

The above quote from here.

The Internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it is a complete substitute for life.

Well, based on Animals evidence, the 'no eaters' have it.

The longest I have personally gone without food is about 48 hours.

The longest I without sleep about 72 hours.

Even with lack of sleep causing me to hallucinate I KNOW I'd be seeing dancing hotdogs and pizza crawling the walls.

in reference to the m0le's post:

The snozberries taste like snozberries!

As for me the only way I stay awake for long periods of time is by eating at certain intervals or I get sick.

If you drink coffee every hour then your likely to stay awake for lots of hours then you could handle normally.
